Yes, when the hose gets like this it's way past time for replacement. And, as you found, when the hose gets like this there's no way you can use a pinch clamp on it. It will break. When the hose is supple and new, the pinch clamp won't hurt it.
    Joe,

The funny thing is that it's a very easy maintenance item and SO important. Anyone out there that thinks originally is important here is not thinking clearly.

Yup! Many years ago I had the entire contents of my 1969 Corvette's fuel tank drain out on the garage floor when the fuel pump diaphragm failed during the night. At that time, the gas water heater was mounted on the floor of the garage. Did we ever dodge a bullet!

The exact same thing would occur if either of the flexible fuel lines failed.

I'm a believer but also want to get the look correct. When I put on the pump I'm rebuilding I'll change the front hose and when I'm low on gas I'll change the back. I'll use the softer low pressure hose as Duke suggests. But while I'm doing this I want to get to a fairly original look, hence, two questions.

        1. Are the spring clamps you can buy from Paragon, Corv Central and others OK?

        2. Attached is a pic which shows the end of my frame line with clip and bolt to frame and then me flex hose termination which right now has both a spring clamp and a screw clamp. My question is this: does the bend/curvature of the frame line look correct? You can't see it in the pic but the front end is up off the frame about 3/4. If not right does someone have a pic of what is?

Vendor sites way the flex hose is 9 inches so I'll make it up with a pich clamp on it and just change it quickly with minimal leakage I hope. I was going to pinch the rear hose but It is likely hard as discussed above.

          Larry,

From your picture I take it your car is a 63. The fuel line should not be bent back outward after it exits the frame clamp. It goes straight then bends inward toward the engine and that bend looks OK.

The 63 cars used tower clamps at the tank hose and fuel pump hose so it's different than 64-67.

The car is a 64 built 11/26/63 serial 5788. Why did you think 63? I must have something else wrong. If it is the heater hose strap I don't know for sure but think the wide clamp style wasn't used till later. If not this then what?

              Larry,

That's what I was looking at, I don't know when the 64 started using the other strap. What does the 64 AIM say about the hose clamps, what part #. The clamps available from some of the vendors are rounded on the ends where the originals are square on the ends. Check the archives.

When I did my 67 fuel pump and tank hoses I went to the auto parts store and bought 2' of 3/8 gasoline hose and wiped the lettering off with acetone. I also installed NOS clamps as I bought a dozen some time ago.

I will check the archives on the strap. Thanks. I actually have one which I think was on a prior 64 car ( but over serial 20000) which I replaced with a sheetmetal clamp/strap. The one I have I know is square ends but is also wider. and thanks for the other advise.
