    1965 Heater Hose

I own a 1965 327/350 w/ac. I need to replace the 3/4 inch heater hose. As I was checking out the path of the hose I noticed that as the hose passes under the ac unit, a previous owner has placed a 90 degree, aluminum tube (90 degree bend) that connects the water pump end and the expansion tank end. My guess is that it was put there to prevent the hose from kinking. My question is, is this a GM fix or some creative solution?

I believe that is original, mine has it. Have you looked at the assembly manual? I glanced at the JRM and do not see it. Don H.

      Re: 1965 Heater Hose

The 1965 AIM page ( C60 D3) shows a pipe item#15 GM#3854099 on the heater hose as it passes under the compressor and connects to the intake manifold. You dont' see this on these cars very often as I think they were made from steel tubing and probably rotted out. The easy fix was to run the hose all the way to the manifold. This item is not shown in the 1966 or 1967 AIM

Thanks for the information. I have not seen the tube in any reference materials. Glad to know it is part of the system.

I saw the use of the tube in the 65's and thought it was such a good idea to make that 90 degree bend I found an original on eBay and installed it along with the factory retainer at the front of the compressor for both of the hoses on my 67. I know it's not correct but why not use a good idea when you can. Great fit.

The 1963-64 Judging Guide states that "Where the upper (heater) hose passes the front of the compressor a curved metal tube, secured with Corbin Type clamps, is inserted in-line with it. This indiates that this pipe might have been a 1963-65 item. Would be interested if it shows in the 1963 or 1964 AIM in the C60 section.
Also seem to remember someone reproducing this item in the correct steel material instead of the current stainless material but haven't been able to located it.

              Owen,

My late production 1965 Corvette equipped with the 327/350 engine and A/C has the 90 degree aluminum pipe.

Page, this is the original from my 63. Note the unique bend, as usual it's a one year only part. That unique bend was not there in 64 as I recall and it's not in any of the repro tubes. I'll post the PN from the AIM later today.

It was GM #3854099. It was never available in SERVICE from GM.

Amazing, they changed PN when they changed the shape.

I have the same setup you do... '65/350HP/Factory A/C...

Here's the Stainless Steel Heater Hose Tube shown in reproduction format from LICS... Part No. 35-33B for 64-6E...

I took mine to a welder and had him weld up each end of the tube and install same for the summer months when the A/C is in use... Stops the Radiant Heat issue dead in its tracks in your interior A/C Heater Box in the summer months for maximum A/C effectiveness... Looks 100% original and your other heater hose is still hooked up to your Expansion Tank for pressure cap and relief purposes... Drain the coolant down and install the open tube for your heater core to fully ciruculate water for heating purposes in the winter... Let's you change your antifreeze twice a year (not a bad thing), gives you maximum A/C performance in the summer and heat in the winter along with full usage of your expansion tank at all times...

                      Works for me...
