    3888883 Head casting #

Anyone tell me(for sure) what the heck these heads were for originally? Pretty sure they weren't OE on a '79 L82.... Some folks are insisting they are 400 heads, but I can't see 400 heads working on a 350(ZBA code), considering the steam holes. Here's the nums from the heads. GM 42 3888883 D2 42 Thanx!

checked three different interchange manuals without finding that casting number. What is casting date and could you recheck the casting number?

GM casting numbers 3, 6, 8 or 9 all look very much alike can be easily mistaken for each other.

I'm going to guess you have a 3998993 and a casting date of D242.

They guy SWEARS the casting number is correct....I've been questioning that for a few days, but he insists that it is what is on the heads. I'll try to get him to get a good pic. This is a friend of mine I'm trying to help. We know they're not correct for the car, but he just wants to know what the heck they are. He's planning on a head/cam upgrade, so it really doesn't matter, but it would be nice to know if he tries to sell these.

Yup, just like these. Enlarge the pic and you'll see the confusion.

Guaranteed he's got the number incorrect. No cylinder heads of that casting number ever existed.

Well...I convinced him to pull the valve covers back off and have another look-see. Boy..is HIS face red! The REAL casting # is 3998993, as was suspected. Mystery solved. He has been properly admonished...lol
                Thanks guys.
