    Fiberglass Repair Release Agent?

I am going to repair the tire tub on my '67. Like many tubs, a large part of the lip is broken off. I have made a 2 part wooden form covering a 120 degree arc- a little bit similar to the form that was written about in the Restorer several years ago. Friends with similar problems will be reusing this form so I wanted to make it robust and want to make sure the form comes away cleanly from the new fiberglass. Can anyone recommend a release agent? I have put several coats of polyurethane on the form but know something more will be required. longer term I am sure there are commercial release agents and I will look into those but I want to make the first trial tomorrow so right now I am looking for an expedient. Maybe something like Pam cooking spray or axle/disc brake grease?? Will appreciate any help you all can give. Thanks, Jim B

      James,
I use 3 different release agents that are made to do that job. I would contact a dealer to see which one fits your needs.
1is water soluble, 1 is a grease, and the other a wax. I use the water soluble as it does not impregnate anything that could mess with priming or painting on parts that need painting. It is best to spray it on (water soluble) rather than brushing it on as you can build up the agent with a second coat without risking a un-even film due to brush marks and draging the first film.

PVA (polyvinyl acetate) is the water based product that can be used, but a few coats of Johnson floor wax will work as well.

Thanks to all for the quick responses. For tomorrow I will try Tracy's idea and I am waxing. Depending on how that works I may get a commercial agent for the next one. thanks to all

James, I was the member who wrote the article. The fiberglass supply company suggests the use of Bees Wax. Five light coats with a buff between each coat. After over one hundred tub repairs, I agree with their recommendation. How are you going to dye the resin?
            Good luck with your efforts.

Hi Scott and thank-you for your article. Another guy is in this with me; I have only the tub from my 67 to do but he has 4 or 5 tubs. I am the form guy and he is dye the resin guy. Last time I asked he didn't have it down yet but was still experimenting. I am eager for advise if you have a formula to offer!
I have bees wax from my target shooting/loading hobby so that is easy.
thanks for the response, Jim B
