    1966 Flight Judging Points

Going for Top Flight this year and points are critical in several areas. Tires and wheels are big point items as we all know.

So, my 66 needs wheels and tires. And from what I can determine at this point I'll be buying:
    - offered by Corvette Specialty MFG (In Driveline) and offered by Corvette Central (15" x 5.5")
-New Steel wheels for 1965-66, as they state ALL NEW tooling with exact detail and not a universal-type

    - offered by Corvette Central Tires: B F Goodrich whitewall 1966-67 775 x 15 with 5/8 " Whitewall , a bias tire

I would appreciate help in determining how many points in total I will be loosing.
    Thanks Much

    Re: 1966 Flight Judging Points

    Bill,

This is not too hard to do.
    1) Find out how many points are allotted to wheels & tires. I could tell you because the points are the same for all Corvettes we judge, but I would rather teach you how to fish -- if you get my idea. Look here:

    2) Find the OEM tires described in your copy of the 1966 NCRS Technical Information Manual & Judging Guide. I don't have one or I would tell you what page to look on.
    3) Find the Standard Deductions for Tires in your copy of The NCRS Judging Reference Manual I don't have my copy at work or I would tell you what page to look on.
    4) Find an illustration of the tires you are considering - probably from the vendor.
Compare the last three above. Once you figure where the vendors tires fit on the scale given in the Standard Deductions you will have a percentage deduction. Work that percentage against the originality points available on the Score sheet. The result will be your answer.

BTW: This is the same process the exterior judges will use on the judging field – or it is the one they should use.

I would be a little leery with claims the reproduction steel wheels are not detectable. Most reproduction parts fall short in some minor detail that might cause a deduction anyway. One of the few exceptions could be a Dewitt aluminum radiator, well trained judge could probably point out issues with it too.

I agree with Mike, nothing against Corvette Specialties but IMO, look for those wheels on the driveline.

Pay special attention to the construction material of the tires as well as the OEM manufacturer. They did not have polyester cord tires on Corvettes in '66, so read precisely what the TIM&JG says about the tires, cord construction and all. For instance, I lost points on my '67 for having BFG bias ply polyester red stripes from Coker. First of all, BFG did not make red stripes, and second of all, they should have been nylon, not polyester.
