I have a 1962, 870 block that needs a set of bearing caps that are a close match to the upper bore in the block. I have a set of caps that will not work. If someone has the same situation, I would like to trade mine and take my chances that another set might work. I was quoted about $800 to buy new caps and have them machined. Thanks, Ken

Re: 1962 mismatiched main bearing caps
Ken,
What you are trying to do is all but impossible. Main bearing caps are align bored to the block. It's like they are mated for life! You can as you stated above mill the caps you have and have the block align bored again. That will be the ONLY way the engine will live for more than a couple hundred miles maybe feet.

Re: 1962 mismatiched main bearing caps
Decades ago, Miloden (?) made an aftermarket four bolt cap for small journal blocks. The bore, as I remember, was smaller than the original cap/block and the new caps had to be align bored to fit the block.
If carefully bored, a minimum of material would have to be removed if the boring equipment is carefully aligned with the original block saddles before boring.
If you find/use used caps, no matter how good the parting line feels, you will still have to align bore the block and that always moves the crankshaft up a little in the block.
Align boring has always been a scary operation. Align honing works well though.- Top
