    63 Body Mount Rubber Blocks

The new body mount kit included a pair of rectangular rubber blocks. If I can decipher the drawing correctly, they are located inboard of the rear body mounts. I assume to help "center" the body over the frame. Since this car was previously "restored", those blocks were missing. Anyone know, if these were used during the entire '63 production? (My AIM does not show them.) And how these blocks were secured? Glued to the frame, or body? Build date 2-22-63. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks,
    Marco

Marco.......my December '62 built coupe had these. Both rested on the cross member just under the rear storage compartment area. Don't know they 'centered the body over the frame' as much as supported the rear compartment storage area. I lightly adhered the rubber blocks to the cross member just before body drop.

Marco, these blocks were likely installed on your Feburary car. They just sat on top of the rear cross member (just aft of the differential crossmember) I think they did phase out toward the end of production. Their only purpose was to wedge under the rear floor to damp vibration. Not sure if they were glued, but if you want to keep them in place, a little dab of liquid nails should do the trick.

My Dec. '62 Convt. had them - "ribbed" side facing up.

Thanks everyone for their response. Makes sense, to have them as vibration dampeners.

They are in the my AIM and should be glued to the cross member, but I don't recall offhand the sheet number. They were not installed on my March '63 SWC, which is why it always had an exhaust system resonance at about 2000 revs. That large, flat luggage floor would "drum".

I never knew they should be there until I bought an AIM back in the seventies. Since they were not available at the time I fabricated two from several layers of thick rubber matting material.

You definitely want them there to avoid that annoying resonance.

Re: 63 Body Mount Rubber Blocks

I don't think they show in my 63 AIM but they are shown in the 1963 shop manual.

I would guess they are not used in 1964 because of the rubber body mount where as 63 is a solid mount.

FWIW, If you are shimming a coupe, use these spacers to determine the shims at the #4 mount location so the space is even across the body to frame cross member left to right and the rubber just slides in each side. The coupe body is very rigid so that will determine approx. how many shims are needed at the #3 mount because the floor pan will be held up by that #4 mount. Tracy has a good idea with tin foil and putty and lower the body to smash then measure the thickness at #3.

Use the same amount of shims at the firewall mount as #3 and fit the doors to keep the body lines nice, they will not change much front to back. On my 63, the drivers side #4 mount is welded on the frame 1/4" higher than the opposite mount so it's the mount with 0 shims while the passenger side #4 mount has 4 shims.

Sorry for the long winded post I just wanted to share my method.

                Thanks Duke and Tim,
The body is on and the blocks are glued in place. I kept the shim count as they were before disassembly. The inboard cushions were previously left out. Those were the only places where I had to play with the shims.
