Pocket porting of 462 heads; need a recommendation for a local or semi-local shop

Does anyone know of a skilled person within a 2-hour drive of San Jose, CA, whom I can trust with my 1966 462 heads to pocket port them as per the recommendations of Duke and others for improved flow?

I definitely want to drive the heads to some shop that I can tour, as opposed to sending them by a shipper to a shop I'll never see.

    Thanks,

    Gary

Gary, these guys are known to be probably the best bay area shop around, see if they can pocket port for you.

In addition to Scott's recommendation I'm sure others in the Bay Area like Joe L. will offer some other leads. There have to be many.

Suggest you take a copy of "How to Hot Rod Small Block Chevys" with you to discuss the operations. That book has all the proper procedures including GM drawings and multiangle valve seat recommendations.

Assuming you also need the valve guides rebuilt, understand what systems the shop offers and make sure the valve stem finish is compatible with the valve guide material and what seals are suitable to allow proper oil flow to the guides, which depends on the particular rebuild system.

Thanks guys. I'm hoping Joe L. might have info as well.

I agree. These guys are as good as it gets. Period. The old guy that ran the business passed away several years ago. However, his sons still run the business and they're the real machinists here anyway.

I've seen some impressive work come out of Gromm Racing Heads, 644 Stockton Ave, Suite J, San Jose.
