Tool to remove lug studs while on the car?

    Hi all,

I'm replacing the lug studs on my '57 race car and I'm trying to figure out if there is a simple tool to press them out without removing anything from the car? I can easily take the hubs off the front and put them in my press, if necessary, but taking the axles out in the rear is something that is a bit more involved. Anyone know of such a tool?

    Thanks,

    Bob

If they are garbage to start with then use an impact hammer and drive them out. Make sure there is enough room to remove them once they break loose or you will have to remove the axle anyway or saw them off to shorten them up.

I have never had to replace a wheel stud on a 1957 Corvette, much less a race car of that vintage, but I have had to replace many and a BFH has always worked for me. Wind up and hit the stud with authority and it will recognize who is master and pop right out. Perry's advice to be sure there is clearance between the brake mechanism and brake backing plate to remove the stud is wise advice -- especially as some race cars have longer than stock wheel studs. If there is not clearance to get the old one out there will not be enough room to get the new one in and disassembly will be in your future.

If you can put a nut on the stud . If the threads are bad you do not need the nut . They drive out with a hammer real easy .Pull the studs back in with the nut.Use a couple of washers under the nut .Some time the knurled part of the stud sticks out past the hub.Re torque the wheel after a few miles or laps to make sure they are staying tight .
