    Engine ID Missing

Sometime in the past, before I purchased my 1965 Corvette, the engine block was "decked". During this process the Engine ID Code/V.I.N was machined off the block. Is there anywhere else on the block where this number is stamped? Is it possible to "raise" this number from the pad?

Owen, go back into the archives and search for "stamp pad", "VIN stamp", etc. There are many threads, and at least one from long ago discusses raising the stamped letters (either with acid or heat, I don't recall) and the damage it can do.

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. There are MANY posts concerning the pad. Lots of information and lots of opinions. I think I will leave the pad alone.

As you may have found from information in the archives, the process of "raising" machined-off numbers is a FORENSIC process and definitely not a RESTORATION process. In a forensic process, the intent is to simply determine what the stamping was, not permanently restore the stamping as it originally existed. There is no way to "raise" the stamping and permanently restore it which is, of course, what you would want to do.

I would suggest doing as others have suggested and checking the casting numbers and dates of the major engine components. You could find that any stamping the engine pad may or may not have had would be totally irrelevant.
