    Muncie Trans Cleanup

I just had my '66 Muncie 4-speed totally rebuilt and now want to cleanup the outside of the casting. It isn't really greasy but has fingerprints, is slightly oily, and now would be the time to clean it before reinstalling it in the car. What would be the best cleaner or other method of cleaning it up? Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks.

If you are trying to clean grease and fingerprints I would use mineral spirits on a rag.

I used a aluminum brightener then a satin clear to keep it clean.

Larry, if it's only a little grease and oil, any of the solvents that the others have recommended will work. The casing is porous, so it takes a little patience. Blasting is not an option because of the "skin" on the outside of cast aluminum. Painting is a last resort.

There are several threads in the archives on this, but there is one in particular from long ago about blasting cast aluminum. If no one else posts it I'll try to look it up later.

Thanks . It isn't bad , only a bit dirty, so I think a solvent cleaner should do the job (maybe a toothbrush to get into the corners would also be good).

Agree. Simple Green. That's what I use.

                    Dom,

Where would I find the brand name for the aluminum brightener that you mention here?
                    Thanks,
                    Jerry

                      Larry,
I get mine from Aircraft spruce, but shipping will kill you. Some auto parts cary it and call it aluminum bright or aluminum cleaner. I bought 5 gallons from a place that washes and cleans aluminum truck trailers. Google aluminum brightener.
We use it prior to priming to remove surface corrosion and it preps the aluminum for primer.

Larry, forgot to say that I chose to put a clear coat over all my cleaned aluminum as it will stain easily.
