    new trailer questions/help

buying a 22' wells cargo enclosed trailer (autowagon). Two questions: will be used primarily for storage for few years until restoration complete on my 67 and 70. Need to know how far apart to place tie downs (D rings) and how far from back and front of car... where do you trailer haulers have yours? Second question is do I really need 10k axles vs 7k axles, my last 20' had 7k and I didn't have any problems, my real concern is when using for storage and maybe going over the axle limit with car and extra crap in trailer. Note: I will never haul anything but vettes or a camaro/firebird, I know this because I won't loan out and only possibility of another car is the ones mentioned. Thanks for your advice.

    Michael,
Have you looked into the e-track or anchorTrax tie down tracks. That should give you more tie-down options. With the heavier axles you get the better load range tires too. More room, more weight you will haul.

Go with the E track tie down. Go with the heavier axles and 16" tires. This will allow you to use LT spec tires giving you a great range of options when buying tires. You are not limited to the ST crap tires when you have 15" this.

Why a 22' ? If you ever plan to sell it a 24' would be much easier to sell . Drag racers and other car people need the extra 2 ' just a thought.

I had years ago and 20 was great, 22 just gives me extra couple feet, 24 little too long and extra cost not worth it. still might even buy the 20' still thinking about it.

I agree. Go with at least a 24'. I have had a 20' and a 24' and a 28' and now a 26' I wish in my last purchase I had stayed with the 28'. Good luck with your decision.

I pull my 20 footer with my 1/2 ton Titan. Not really a problem. I do use the weight distribution system and air bags. I'm thinking of upgrading to a Chevy 2500 Diesel. DSCN2628.jpg

I haven't been around a WC for a while, but a friend had one in the 90's and it was VERY heavy. Have you looked at some of the other brands, like maybe a used Featherlite? I have a 28' Exxis tag and love it. It's all alum. and I first pulled it with my Z71 at the time I bought it and it had the 327 I think. That was like 15 yrs ago. I pull it with a Denali now with a 6.2 and almost don't know it's back there except for wind moving it around a little on interstate. The story was when I bought it that the family who owned Featherlite sold the company and had a 5 year non compete. When it was up they started Exxis. Later they swallowed Feathercraft back and dropped the Exxis brand. I've seen used Featherlites around the car shows for not much more used than the new steel trailers with plywood insides cost in other brands.

wells cargo 20' is 3100lbs, 3500 for 24' I think. I want to stay under $8k for cost as I won't tow this more than once or twice a year, rest of time is storage.

Smallest trailer that will do the job. Largest axles you can put on that small trailer and the largest 3500 diesel on the road to pull it.

You have talked about how long of trailer, but how wide ?? Will 8 ft. work or do you need 8.5 ft. and how many inches from driver side door to the floor?

wells cargo 8.5 wide, will not get drivers door only curbside...previously had drivers and vette door to low and I never used it, also will have winch.
