at the most some overspray around edges as it was on motor when motor painted. maybe John Hinckley will chime in for the most accurate answer.

      Michael,

I think the answer is the bell housing coverage varied widely. Here's a shot of the Tonawanda engine plant. The bell housings look pretty well covered in paint to me.

        Agree with Joe R.

My 396 bellhousing (a '403') was completely painted the reddish-orange color characteristic of Tonawanda big blocks. About half of the paint remains, the rest peeled off.

Here's the clutch fork dust shield (boot), which I removed in the early '90s, as it was crumbling. You can see some orange on it. The parts tag is the GM dealer replacement.

Notice the cast # in the rubber -- 3844208; parts history says replaced (in service) by 3841738 on 10-65 !!

My 65 BB (17346) bellhousing just had a very light dusting next to the block with no overspray on the clutch fork or rubber .
