    67 carpet replacement help

    Hi:

I decided to reploace the faded carpet in my 67 coupe. I ordered ACC carpet that has the mass backing on it. Upon removing the old carpet, I found it had jute underneath, at least over the wheel wells and rear center carpet area. It is in good shape. Should I remove it to put down the new carpet (I don't think it was there from the factory) or should I place the new carpet with the mass backing over it? My concern is it may be too thick to lie down properly. Your comments are greatly appreciated as I will be putting the new carpet in soon!

    Thanks.

    Re: 67 carpet replacement help

    Bob,

The '67 I restored a few years ago had the original jute with black covering, and the carpet I bought from Al Knoch had no backing at all. I also had samples from 2 other vendors and no backing whatsoever. The original jute IIRC was about 1/4" thick, maybe a bit more. If yours is in good condition I'd save it.

Either ACC got it wrong, or they have 2 versions available(with or without backing?). I'd save/use the original jute, and either return the ACC set, or.......remove the mass backing from it and toss it out, if that's possible without too much trouble. Also, I'd imagine installing the mass backed carpet over the seatback reinforcement panel would be just about impossible.
