    4 speed shifter mounting hardware

On AIM UPC 7 - B2 it only calls out the washer for the long bolt and it matches what I removed. The second washer for the smaller bolt is drawn the same yet I had a split lock washer when taken apart.

What kind of lock washer should be under the short bolt? The AIM shows this washer but with no part number.

    Thanks,

    Bill

      Hi Alan,

It is the washer under item #7 bolt. The washer is not called out as an item.

      Thanks,

      Bill

My recollection is that both were external tooth star washers. It's possible that yours were changed at some point OR it could be that a split lockwasher was substituted at St. Louis. I think that star-type lockwashers do a better job of locking a fastener assembly than do split lockwashers (which do practically nothing). However, I still don't like star washers because they are made from thin, soft material which can break. I really don't think they have any place in a critical assembly. When I use split lockwashers, I use SAE grade 8. They don't lock any better than low grade split lockwashers but at least they will hold torque and not break,

By the way, you should carefully inspect the long shifter attachment bolt. These bolts sometimes crack, especially near the head. This bolt is exactly the same as the long small block exhaust manifold bolts.

Hi Joe and thank you for the detailed response. I had read on a previous post where you recommended inspecting the long bolt. I did so and it appears to be in excellent shape. I will reinstall both long and short bolts with new external tooth washers.

Agree with Joe on original cars I see an external star washer being used. But you never know they (STL) could have substantiated a split lockwasher. But I would also go with the star washer.
