Does anyone know if GM factories (foundries, assembly lines, etc.) were closed any length of time during holidays?

Yes, they were, but not anywhere near the extent in the 60's that they are today; for instance, the Christmas Eve-to-the-day-after-New Year's day automotive holiday didn't begin until well into the 70's. Prior to that, most Holidays were strictly a one-day-off arrangement.- Top

Hi Bob,
The cylinder case for my 71 sb was cast on the twilight shift of December 31, 1970. So the foundry was working New Years eve.

Sort of, but not the same. For a Holiday, the pay for that day off (for an hourly worker) came in your next paycheck, so there was no delay. Model change was different - that was a temporary layoff, and in the 60's you had to apply for State Unemployment, with a waiting period. The S.U.B. (Supplemental Unemployment Benefit) program didn't come into being until the 70's, which eliminated the need to apply at the State Unemployment Office.- Top

I worked straight thru as we made machine changes, re-routing steam, gas and electrical lines. This was in some cases the only time available to repair or replace worn or update machinery between model changes. Hurt the family life though.- Top
