'92 LT1 frayed throttle body cable

In search of some advice and answers to a couple of questions. The cable from the ASR to the throttle body on my '92 automatic transmission corvette is frayed at the throttle body end. My understanding is that this "part" is discontinued.
    1. I suspect not, but is it possible to repair the frayed end and if so how?
    2. Is it possible to remove the cable linkage from the plastic casing and insert a new cable?
    3. The cable housing is siamesed with the transmission throttle valve cable. Do these have to be replaced as a unit and if so, any suggestions where I could get a quality used cable pair?
Thanks is advance for suggestions and help.

Well, here we have another C4 parts availability problem. The cable you need, GM #10163848, is, indeed, discontinued. I do not know of any alternate source for it other than, of course, used.

I do not know if it's possible to repair the cable in some way. My strong suspicion is that it's not. However, I can see the possibility that someone could develop a repair strategy. The problem is that I've never heard of a problem like you described afflicting this cable. So, that limits the interest in someone developing a repair strategy and, certainly, limits the interest in the aftermarket making available a replacement cable.

As much as I dislike this route, I would have to say good used is your best bet. Fortunately, I don't really think this is ordinarily a life-limited part so a good used piece will probably fix you up "for the duration".

I've been giving this some more thought. It might just be possible to replace the inner cable. One problem, of course, would be installing the cable ends. However, I think an aircraft repair shop could likely install the cable ends.

The big "fly-in-the-ointment" is whether, or not, the inner cable is just a simple stranded cable or if there is a more complex inner configuration. I just don't know what the inner configuration is like. If it's a simple stranded cable end-to-end, then I think you might very well be able to thread a new inner cable of the same OD through the housing. You'd want to be sure it was of the exact same length as the original, too, but that would be easy since you could use the original to determine the exact length. In that case, getting the ends installed would be the only problem.

        Jeff,

One other option is a good motorcycle repair shop. I needed a throttle cable for a OTC (other than corvette) project and a good local shop served my needs well.
