    Flushing air from coolant system

The lower tower clamp on my heater core failed, and I had to replace it. All the coolant drained from the core. Should I just run the system with the cap on the overflow tank until hot, then refill? Or run the system until hot with the cap off to let the air out? It is a manual 427/400 1969. thanks

Before you start the engine add coolant to fill the expansion tank (small block) half full or the radiator (big block) to about an inch or two below the cap. The radiator side tank may have level marks and there should also be level information in the owner's manual and CSM.

Start the car and let is fully warm up with the cap off. At the point the thermostat opens the coolant level may drop. Fill to the above level, put the cap on and drive it a mile or two.

Park the car, and let is sit overnight. Check the coolant level the next day when the engine is cold and add, if necessary.

Recheck after the one or more temperature cycles until the cold coolant level stabilizes.

If you want to do it the quick way, then jack up the front of the car until the tank is above the motor.

That should help on a BB with the fill cap on the radiator.

Or, bouncing the front end up and down can help get more coolant in before start-up.

Drill a 4mm hole in the edge of the temp. controlled valve, when you fill the system it will allow the air to clear the engine...
