Anyone have a correct color designation for the "frosting" on the later issue 1964 Corvette hubcap? Thanks.

Re: '64 Hubcap color
Loren, most people use the dull aluminum Krylon but I find that has too much of a silver look to it. My 64's are more greyish, wish I knew who made it. Maybe a match at a paint supply house might be in order?

Re: '64 Hubcap color
Dan, I would agree with regard to the dull aluminum - 3 of the caps are in really nice shape colorwise and Young Sales & I have made a selection, added some flattener and will shoot one of the caps and compare it with the other two, trying to allow the "50 year fudge factor" and see what the result is. If good, I'll send the formula on to you.- Top

Re: '64 Hubcap color
Not to change the subject but I think the general consensus of opinion is that the frosted caps appeared around the 5000 VIN. The 64 coupe that we bought brand new came with shinny/polished caps and the VIN was 8763.Last edited by Michael H.; February 2, 2014, 10:42 PM.- Top

Re: '64 Hubcap color
I'll welcome the change of subject, if only to get some clarification - the 6th Edition JG seems to call it out (pg 70) 180 degrees different, starting with polished and then going to paint - maybe I'll put the spray booth on "hold".....- Top

Re: '64 Hubcap color
My understanding is 64 first had the polished, then the mostly painted ones second. Looked at the JG and it seems to go along with that theme. ONLY QUESTION MIGHT BE CUT OFF POINT ZONE.1964 Red FI Coupe, DUNTOV '09

Re: '64 Hubcap color
The JG has the order right. Just not the time/VIN. Polished was the 1st design. Frosted was the 2nd design.
My car was #8763 and came with polished caps.- Top

Re: '64 Hubcap color
Michael, Loren, found a post card from Noland Adams dated Sept 22 1983, it states: 'Results are not super clear, but it looks like the 64 change in wheel covers was between 6500 and 8000, thus your 8477 should have Frosted wheel covers.' This was when he was still gathering data for his mid year book. He took pictures of my 64 at Copper Mountain National in 84. The picture of the license plate 'PWR CPE' is my old Saddle/Saddle 64.1964 Red FI Coupe, DUNTOV '09

Re: '64 Hubcap color
I liked both frosted and polished covers for 63.
For 64, though, I always thought the early polished covers were the ugliest of all for any year Corvette. Looked a little like a flying saucer from outer space.
When we got our new 64 coupe, one of the very first things I did was remove the covers and store them in the garage. I planned on new "mag wheels" but never could afford them so the wheels were naked black until we sold the car two years later.- Top

Re: '64 Hubcap color
Mikey, I agree with what you said but was afraid to put it in print. So here goes. Not all of the Corvette wheel covers over the years were/are anything to brag about.
I had a new '65. You couldn't breath on those covers as they would bend putting them on. I remember that when I saw the new 66's I immediately ordered a set of '66 wheel covers.
But this is NCRS and we want things original don't we. So we put on what is correct whether or not we personally like the item.
Last story: I remember when I had a first BB 68 in the hood. Had these wheel covers that weighed 100 lbs each didn't they. Immediately took them off and put hubcaps on. Meanwhile off the subject as usual.- Top
