    CRC Freeze-Off

Thanks Gary Chestnut for the fine article in "The Restorer" on the CRC Freeze -Off. I just got two cans of it. One for my helper and one for me.
Removing studs from baseplates, etc can be tricky and sometimes a disaster. My helper is not allowed to remove the top water outlet studs as he has broken too many off. Maybe with Freeze Off things will be better.
Hopefully the Freeze-Off will work as you say. Big trouble if it doesn't. LOL

CRC makes two versions of the Freeze-Off. One is cheaper than the other Gary.
I got the more expensive one from Eastwood. Super penetrant with freez-shock action. Thanks very much, John

kudos to Gary - I need to do some work on brand "X" and had my parts store order a can for me - although it is cold enough here that I could have just left the intake out on the driveway last night !

Gary, Ditto here also. You can do a lot of tricks putting parts in the freezer you know.
When I install an oil filler tube in an FI baseplate I typically put it in the freezer for a couple of hours. Most of the time I have to grind off some of the OD as the repros are fat for some reason. THen I stick the tube in the freezer and later I use a dead blow hammer to install it.
Failure to do the above my result in a split/broken baseplate or intake. John

        Re: CRC Freeze-Off

CRC Freeze Off report. The stuff is amazing. Just used it on a customers 61 FI plenum. On the bottom of the plenum where the fuel meter bottom bracket goes a bolt was broken off flush with the plenum.
Here's how I removed the remains of a broken 1/4-20 bolt. Lucked out and hit dead nuts drilling a hole down thru the center of it. (used my drill press).
Then I put eye goggles on again. Sprayed the CRC Freeze off in the hole for about 5 plus seconds. Directions say to use it for 10-15 seconds. Then I waited 4 or 5 minutes. Sprayed the CRC a second time. Waited 5 minutes. Put a new Easy out in the hole. Tapped the top of it lightly with a hammer. The broken off bolt screwed right off with no strain at all!!!!!
Only one thing wrong with Gary Chestnuts suggestion gang. I learned about it too late.
You must have a can of this on the shelf. Thanks again Gary, John

In my experience, the only thing that is improved by getting the more expensive stuff from Eastwood is their bottom line.

I know this. What I don't understand is how you have gotten this far in the hobby and don't know about Eastwood. BTW, I have used CRC Freeze-off and in my opinion it is worth the cost of admission.

Don't get me wrong, I generally don't have any problem with the quality of stuff from Eastwood. Sometimes, it's the only source for some desirable items. I have just found that in most cases, you can get the same stuff elsewhere much cheaper.

If my local O'Reilly's carries Freeze-Off I'll definitely save on shipping from Eastwood. Shipping often doubles the cost of buying one rattle can.

Bought mine at O'reilly off the shelf for $5.99. Only slightly more costly than WD-40.

                          Re: CRC Freeze-Off

Several weeks ago I had a bad experience with removing a cast iron plug from the front of a '61 FI plenum baseplate. I tried a little heat, then penetrant, then heat again. Nothing. Then while trying to wrench it off, the square head of the cast iron plug broke right off.

I got the drill bits out. Because it was the front of the baseplate where the heater hose fitting goes, I couldn't use my drill press. I had to do it by hand. I had to step drill several times to open it up without getting too close to the aluminum threads. That was tricky, then using a hacksaw blade, cut in 4 quadrants to relieve the plug, without touching the aluminum threads. Then a sharp chisel try to break out the plug quarters. It took me over an hour to get it out.

Then I read Gary's Freeze-off article. I wish I knew then what I know now. I bought a can at my local NAPA.......for the next time!

                          Thanks Gary!

p.s. I've used Eastwood restoration products for years. Pricey, but some items are worth it. I also love their specialty tools.

I saw this stuff in Napa the day before my Restorer arrived. My Kroil experience has been so-so, and thought of grabbing the freeze off for a "what the heck" experience. Unfortunately, I thought otherwise. I'll be picking some up Monday.

Good article Gary. It has spurred discussion.
