1966 conv. Body mount #4 shims

Setting my body on frame but there was no history of shims by previous owner. What number of shims might have been normal. I have installed 8 in boby mount 4 and it could use more. Any comments or suggestions? Intending to top flight.

You probably need to remove some in the forward body mounts being you have so many in #4. Eight is an unusually high number of shims. I you do remove the #1,2,and 3 shims you will most likely need to add some at the radiator support to frame location.

      Robert,

OK, here goes my method! I install 2 shims at the #1 and #3 Position. Make sure that they are tight with the body in place. Then forget them for now! Secondly you have to install the doors or have something such as a 1 X 1 steel tube to make sure that opening is correct for the doors you are going to use. Then shim the #4 and radiator as needed to fill the gaps. If there are no gaps go back to #1 and #3 and install a couple more shims. This is just trial and error but it has worked. I am assuming that you have installed the correct body mount cushions as directed by the body mount kit to begin with before trying the shims. As far as the 8 shims, that is far too many so something else should be done. Sounds like the body is tilted forward too much to begin with so go back and work with the #1 and #3 body mounts and shims. Remember that the door gaps has to be perfect!

PS There is NO set figure for shims or standard. The shims level the frame and body as there is no standard. The shims were determined by measuring the frame with no regard to the body.

        Robert,
Years ago Noland Adams published an article on how to shim a C2. Hope this helps.

          Robert,

Make sure the frame has it's wheels, tires and hopefully engine and is sitting on a fairly level floor.

Remember the firewall #1 and the behind the door #3 are on the same plane so the shim count there should be approx. the same.

Make sure the cushions are in place as stated in post #3 and start with maybe 3 shims at the #1 and #3 mount then check the doors to align the a pillar and the body line front and back. This will take some time so be patient.

When you get it close the rear most #4 mount on a convertible gets shimmed to close the gap at the top of the door in the rear. If there is no gap and it's too close then the #1 and #3 need more shims to lift the body then check for the correct gap. On a coupe my experience is that the body very rigid in this #4 body mount area and can be just as simple as taking any space that's visible at that mount.

The front core support mount IMO should be approx the same amount of shims as the #1 mount as a starting point then check the gap at the door front similar to the rear #4 mount above.
