    And a '64 Tanker sells for $350K…..

'64 FI cars are quite hot now aren't they. More '64 FI's being restored than one can imagine.

Those two Big Tanks were in the collection of Vance Shapley of Memphis, TN. The 63 was found by Michael Hanson and restored by Marty Fowler of Kennett, MO. Marty could be classified as the premier restorer in the United States. The 64 tanker was never restored but just cleaned. It was purchased thru Bill Mock of OK. The pink car was also restored by Marty Fowler of Kennett MO.

I don't think so. There were never all that many SERVICE FI units manufactured. So, the total number of PRODUCTION 63-65 FI units + the total number of 63-65 SERVICE FI units= the absolute maximum number of 63-65 FI Corvettes there could ever be. Of course, some FI cars might not have been "born that way" but the total number could not exceed the aforementioned.

Thanks for that info Joe, but is it not possible to re-stamp and otherwise alter units of older vintage to appear as a '63-'65? That was really what I was thinking, but I am no expert on FI, I would never have one, too much trouble for me.

BTW, these are all really nice cars, but I do wonder why Michael's '63 silver/black tanker ZO6 is so much more valuable than the others.

Joe is correct but what puts a wrench into our thinking may be this. It seems that were the 63 to 65 FI cars were scrapped the fuel injections survived. A alot of the FI units were removed by the dealers, etc and put on the shelf because the mechanics could not make them run.
Therefore the FI unit is being used over again on a new batch of fuel cars. But even so this number isn't close to approaching the total number of original FI cars from 63 to 65. At least 4700 cars came thru with FI in that period.
The service replacement figures out there are all incorrect according to RP in the old days. My records show less than 300 SR units sold over the counter.
Well I do believe a lot more than that have been sold and so did Frank Scibica.. But say 1000 SR units were sold. That in itself is minute number.

So to recap Joe Lucia is correct.

But now lets skip down to the '57 FI cars. Whew!!!! is all I can say to that year. If I had a buck for how many people asked me how much it cost to make their 57 an FI car I would be rich.
The list I have of service replacement replacement '57 FI units is a joke so I won't go there. John

Thanks John, perhaps I should rephrase my speculation, that there are and will be cleaver FI fakes coming out of the woodwork for the newly valuable and trendy '63-'65 FI cars. And would a few more big tanks emerge as well? I guess maybe there were service units of those sold over the counter? Caveat Emptor on these is in order I would say.

Like I said, there may very well be 63-65 FI cars appearing that "were not born that way". However, the absolute total number cannot be too many more than were ever originally produced.

Also, the configuration of the 57-62 FI units is so different from 63-65 that they could not be used to make up a 63-65 FI that would fool anyone even slightly "in the know".

I don't know that we've seen a significant recent upsurge in prices for most 63-65 FI cars, its just the ZO6s and tankers that I see bringing the really big bucks...

That 64 was by far the best car vs. the other tankers at the sale and the buyer must have realized that as well.

Since BIG TANKS are beginning to command big bucks, maybe it's time for me to restore my tanker..........

The silver/red #8848 Z06 leaving Salt Lake City, Ut, headed for Memphis somewhere around 1981?

The forecast was light snow in the mountains of Utah but about 50 miles in, we encountered a blizzard. Thought I was going to die in those mountains!

No engine/weight in the Z06 so the car/front wheels didn't always follow the tow vehicle. If I turned right, the front wheels on the Corvette turned left.

That's incredible. If I had seen such a piece of junk at the time, I would have recommended the crusher. How did this thing turn into something worth almost a $1/2 mil? Maybe a $1/2 mil in parts and labor?
