Re: 70-76 Corvette Black
At least 50 black 1973 Corvettes were produced for a dealer in New York. We had one that was noted on the paperwork as being painted black. The window sticker showed a charge for special paint, but didn't call out the color, but the tank sticker did.- Top

Re: 70-76 Corvette Black
Body design had nothing to do with it. The body material was the problem. The CN story I mentioned above had photos and text about the fiberglass out gassing in the paint drying ovens and causing the need for spot repairs to the paint. A new body material was introduced in 1971 that, among other things, was an effort to mitigate this problem. That story was an announcement of that advance in material.
Black was an available color in 1969. Some of the rubber bumper people would have to tell us (or someone with The Black Book could look it up) when black again became available, but it was a big part of the 1978 Indy Pace Car. While we have no paint production numbers for 1969, I do not think black was a very popular seller for Corvette; and that probably added to the lack of it being seen as an option for a while.
As noted black became available in early '76 for the '77 MY. Specifically, as of August 6, 1976 the 1977 available colors did not include black, but did offer chartreuse which was quickly removed from availability. One chartreuse with black interior was assembled. Shortly after August 6 black was made available. I wanted to order black but since it was not available I ordered #72 Medium Red. The dealer mistakenly coded black cloth and leather instead of black leather as I requested. Luckily I caught the error and it was changed. As far as '69 black cars I looked at a black '69 convertible, black leather, black soft top, 435 HP, 4 speed, 3.70, F-41, side mounted exhaust just before ordering the '77. I wish I had bought the '69. For '69 the finish looked pretty good.- Top

It was like an old timers convention. I spoke to people whom I haven't seen in decades.

You are a little quick on the keyboard. Stop and think what event takes place the end of June. I will give you a bonus hint -- it is NOT an NCRS event.Terry- Top

Re: 70-76 Corvette Black
when I lived in Arkansas the salesman I was dealing with for a 70 that was black with black leather that he bought and received from the factory, was a 454/390 with a/c and 4-spd car. I saw the car being cleaned in the dealers service area and sticker was still on it...I tried to buy it buy no sale he said.Michael

Would that be BG? Different venue but the same people. God I miss the old days at Bloomington. The nights at the holiday inn & the burn outs were priceless. AH the good old days when life was simple.65 350 TI CONV 67 J56 435 CONV,67,390/AIR CONV,70 454/air CONV,

Re: 70-76 Corvette Black
Back in 1976 a fellow Corvette Club buddy ordered the "special paint" option (in primer) and had the dealer paint it black. He loved it and it looked fine. My silver on my new '76 not so much. Had the dealer touch it up three times then just gave up and had the car completely repainted in 1977!Peter Gregory # 4157

Re: 70-76 Corvette Black
I ordered my '76 in white as it was the most forgiving color based on the paintwork I had seen at the time. The inside areas of the roof 'sail panels' looked like stucco. When black was again available I ordered my '79 L82 in black and the paint was 'OK', but had some obvious brush touched-up areas that I was able to correct to an acceptable look. The poor paint was just a part of owning a Corvette then...Both '76 and '79 had record production numbers for the time, so the QC on paint and other things was probably sacrificed just to get product out the door.- Top
