1967 VIN plate errors or mistakes

I'm interested in making an offer on a 1967 convertible in another state. I asked the owner to send a photo of the VIN plate. Everything looks correct with one exception. In the place where the S for St Louis should be a 7 is printed. So the first part of the VIN reads 1946777 rather than 194677S. The plate looks original, sharp corners, not rounded, the correct rosetta type rivets.

Does anyone have any information on possible misstamping VIN plates in 1967? Help is needed.

Roger don't know if you had a chance to look below at the similar threads there is a good one there that has good input.

Ed, Thanks I read all the threads. I should have included in my first post that the Protect-o-plate and shipping form both have the S in the VIN number. The frame also has the S in the VIN number. The current owner say the current title has the 7, as does the VIN plate. He does have a number of previous titles and I think he said he has the original title. So I'm going back to him to confirm that the use of the 7 is there on all prior titles including the first title. If that is the case do you think NCRS and the current judges would find that that information is enough to prove that this is a mistake perhaps happening at time of manufacture rather than someone trying to change something?

I would say legitimate since frame etc. have it, frames are not likely to be faked...but buyer beware.

Michael, Thanks for your input. Hopefully the prior titles and most importantly the original title if it exists has the 7, and not the S. Roger

roger back in the late 70's i got pull over on a sat morning in my 65 while bringing my brother to boy scouts. the cop was a woman and the nastiest cop i had ever encountered. she went over my car from stem to stern and found that my vin tag had the same misteak as yours. she told me that if it was sat or fri night she would have had my car impounded. so the misteaks are out there.

Roger, I would check with your state on the VIN tag being stamped wrong to see what they say. I would also see how this would play out as far as the NCRS would be concerned when it comes to having your car judged if that is what your plans are. Dave Brigham is your contact. I would also take a pic. of the tag. and maybe send it to Dave as proof is in the pudding, this may help him.
