    Battery Tender PLus question

The battery that was in the '72 when I bought it gave up the ghost and I've purchased an Optima battery and a Battery Tender Plus to replace it. This is probably a simple question but reading the directions with the Battery Tender I can't come up with the proper way to connect the ring connectors in conjunction to a twist type battery disconnect switch. Should the black ring connector be attached at the same point the disconnect switch is connected to the battery? I can't see how it would work any other way but wanted to verify.

    Thanks for any advice.

    Glen,
With that arrangement I use the squeeze clips instead of the ring connctors.

I too use the clip connections for maintaining my lead acid batteries.

Optima batteries are gel cells and require a maintainer designed for use with a gel cell. I believe the Battery Tender + is not such a product. I recently bought a C-TEK for just such a battery. It will also maintain AGM and other types of batteries and has a de-sulphation mode. Contact Optima to find out which maintainers are suitable for use with their batteries. One can seriously damage a battery by using the wrong charger/maintainer.

If you check Optima's website it gives you ideas on what type of chargers to buy without naming names.
And, Optima's site specifically states they are an AGM battery, not a gel battery.

OK< but then it needs a charger/maintainer designed for use with AGM batteries. I suspect this is one of the reasons so many folks are having problems with the reproduction batteries with a smaller battery hidden inside. If that smaller battery is not lead acid you need to know what kind of battery it is and get a charger/maintainer compatible with that kind of battery.

This is not as simple as it was twenty years ago.

I killed the first deep cycle optima I bought because, out of ignorance, I connected it to the wrong type of float charger.

Second deep cycle optima has been going strong for about 6 years. It sits idle for long periods but never sees a float charger of any kind.

When my 2002 convertible came home from the dealer in October 2001 there was an Optima Red Top waiting for it on the work bench. For the next 10 years any time the car was not being driven the battery was hooked up to a Deltran Battery Tender Plus. The Optima was replaced reluctantly when my wife said she was uncomfortable traveling in the car with a 10 year old battery. In those 10 years I put only 16,000 miles on the car so it spent lots of time on that Battery Tender Pus. I use the clips to attach the charger.

                Re: Battery Tender PLus question

Thanks everyone. I phoned the Optima technical line on Friday and was told that the Battery Tender Plus would work with their red top battery so I guess I'll give it a try and monitor how it goes. I will use he clips.

                Thanks,

                Glen
