64 r conv. rear deck latch overspray; body off or on restore?

I am replacing the chrome rear deck latching locks. From what I understand on the underside of the deck the mounting bolts, washers and attaching hardware have to have overspray so to not lose points. Correct? My frame appears solid. However, I want to get the surface rust off, inspect the frame thoroughly and get a good look at whatever else (gas lines, etc) so to preserve this car. I'm not a mechanic, but believe I can get some local help to get he body off/on. So much to this and don't want to get into anything that I can't handle. If anyone has the time to talk this over so I can decide body off or on restore I would appreciate it (518) 248-1105 Ordered Noland book and spoke and know it depends on what I want to do with car. Goals are to preserve the car for long term and score high in regional judging. Thanks very much, Mike.

What are you referring to, Michael? The rear deck latches underneath are plain steel that were painted over with all of the hardware when the car was painted. The convertible top latches are chrome, but were not on the car when it was painted.

As far as your frame goes, there was a recent thread about rust, and one about frame off restoration. Search the archives for "frame off".

Thanks Paul. I am referring to the hardware underneath the deck that holds the chrome latches which are on top of the deck. The hardware has red overspray so I wasn't sure if that was factory or when car was repainted. I'll check that thread. Thanks again, Michael

Paul is correct, there should be no paint on the bottom of soft top latches. The rest of the deck latching hardware along the bottom front edge of the deck was installed and should have ample paint coverage.
