    C2 engine removal

I am about to pull the engine in my 65', I have a two post asymetrical lift in my garage. My question is, would it be wise to use the lift as a hoist to remove the engine? Has anyone done this? and does anyone have a play by play to do this? If I can't use my lift I'll just buy a engine hoist and do it that way. THANKS for all help.

    Doug,
A engine hoist would be best since it need to be lifted and moved at the same time.

Doug, I did this on my lift( same lift). its best to pull the car a little further forward than you normally do about 8 to 10 In. I removed the pass front wheel and slide the engine lift under the wheel and. installed a jack under the belly of trans. and unbolted everything. When I did this I removed the engine mounts completely to make it easy to bolt and un-bolt the 4 speed trans to engine.

If you engine lift has a extra long arm and you can do from the front its makes life a little easier. however my lift was only long enough to remove the engine over the fender.

I use a chain hoist to remove an engine. The car is moved for positioning. The same would be for your 2 post hoist. I attempted to install an engine in a car with the header panel installed (area in front of the hood) and found that the engine hoist I planned to use did not have enough "reach" to get the engine positioned correctly. I had to revert to my chain hoist, which had no restrictions. With a C2 you have a significant distance from the front of the car to the engine centerline so check that out before you buy. Luckily for me, my engine hoist was "borrowed", so I had no monetary investment.

I have an old chain fall (hoist) hanging from a beam overhead which makes this a one man job It's a great old tool. Great for removing body too.

As are mentioned in the other replies there are several problems to consider. Are you going to pull the engine but not the transmission? I have not tried this so it may be easier that pulling both the engine and transmission. If you remove both together you have to tilt the engine (front up, transmission down) in order to get it out. To do that you should try to find the device that is available that allows such a tilting movement (sorry, I can't recall what they are called). Using a chain to attach to the engine and a chain-hoist to lift may work by connecting to the chain pretty far forward so the front of the engine lifts first. Many engine hoists have their arm too short to reach over the front of the car to the balance point of the engine / transmission as mentioned by others. Unless you can extend the arm to reach to the right location you may have to position the engine hoist beside one front fender and lift from the side. In that case the front wheel on that side may have to be removed, in which case you wont be able to roll the car out from under the engine when it is raised. We did mine this way and used a floor jack to lift the front of the car and to allow the car to be moved backwards and out from under the engine. Whichever way you do it you should have some helpers.
