    Unusual NOS 63-67 fan-clutch 3814137

An unusual NOS 3814137 fan-clutch just sold on Ebay for $300 (not mine, see link below). The fan-clutch is stamped "CJ" and "A4J" (January 4, 1969 - in my opinion). It was in the yellow/black GM box from the "old days" (about 1963 or older) with the 3814137 part number but the fan-clutch style is like those made in 1968 and later (which checks out with the January 4, 1969 stamped date).

According to Chevrolet Parts History GM # 3814137 was discontinued in January 1968 and replaced with GM # 3916139.

Does anyone else see anything wrong with this picture?

The top photo is the fan-clutch stamped "CJ" & "A4J".

The bottom photo (from my file of photos) is a NOS 3916139 fan-clutch stamped "CJ" & "K20H (October 20, 1967) which is as far as I know similar to the Eaton fan-clutches installed on the 1963-1967 assembly lines.

      Dave------

The GM #3814137 was used on many 1963-66 passenger cars. It was also the PRODUCTION-optional fan clutch specified for 1963-67 Corvettes with small block. Just how many were actually originally installed in Corvettes I do not know and I expect no one does or ever will know.

I agree that the configuration of the clutch in the eBay item does not appear consistent with what I would expect for that part number. I believe it's also not consistent with a fan clutch that would ever have been originally packaged in a black/yellow GMSPO box.

So, it makes me wonder if the fan clutch and the box "came together". The old "switcheroo" has happened before.

        Joe,

I agree with you completely. I feel sorry for the person that bought the fan clutch for $300. I would pay $10 for it if I saw it at a swap meet. I think that the box has more value than the fan-clutch
