Tony, I do all those things you have mentioned. I've got 175 members in my local club and there's only 3 of them in NCRS. Think maybe cost might have a lot to do with not wanting anything to do with joining NCRS? I'm 68 yrs old, been doing Corvette stuff since 1964 and I'll maybe never get to the Master Judge level.

to me it seems you or me are paying to work???? doesn't make since for us seniors who live on a limited income - love my bette and have always loved vetted from day 1 - not a cheap hobby -

Yes, we pay to work at the meets. That is and always has been the system. Even back before there were judging points -- if you brought your car for judging you were expected to judge, and you paid for that honor. My wife understands, or at least tolerates it, but in 30+ years the guys and gals at work never have. So it goes. It is not unlike Corvettes in general -- if you have never driven one, you will never understand.

1. Weeks on my back cleaning a chassis.
2. 100+ hair follicles gone.
3. Countless nights of lost sleep.
4. New refill for my Nexium.
5. Hangover, after too late night out.
6. Three nights away from my lovely wife.
7. And a big surprise, finding out I was standing in a ghey club at a Drag Show!

Yes, we pay to work at the meets. That is and always has been the system.

From my view, I'll agree with everything that's been said about NCRS (great organization , great people) but I take exception to making members pay to judge.
I helped put on Corvette shows and judged for 20 years including Corvettes at Carlisle and worked my butt off. But I never had to pay to do so.

I currently work 15 to 20 SCCA race events per year and spend a lot of my own money to do it. But I'm not going to pay to do it. SCCA events are like NCRS events, all the work is done by volunteers . If we made them pay to work............ we wouldn't be racing.

BTW, if you think putting on car show is expensive, you should see the bill for putting on a road race.

What is the revenue source-is it something that exists at NCRS events? I follow the line of logic regarding the 'pay to work' objection- but if that practice were discontinued, what would replace it? As stated above, if it were loaded on the owners of cars being judged, that cost would possibly discourage bringing out the cars.

I do not mind "paying" to judge at all. After all, I learn much more each time than the amount I pay for registration or updating my manuals, or flash light batteries, or new mirrors, or-----. I also do not mind paying for registration as it keeps money in the coffers contributing to Vinnie's great work, the Cincinnati duo, and others. In addition the events are great social gatherings and as mentioned good food. I guess you only consider it paying to work if you consider it work and not benefiting from the experience. 'Looking forward to paying for another great experience soon.

First, I have no idea of the costs/financial requirements of putting on a meet, the last Corvette show where I was involved with finances was 30 years ago.
The revenue for a race comes entirely from the entry fees. At a race however, the number of entrants is quite a bit higher. But the cost to put one on is significant, like $6 to as much as $10,000 just to rent the track , 5 or so vehicles like a tow truck, rescue truck, fire truck to purchase, equip and maintain. The entry fees have to support all of this.
As to "making up the difference", it's not for me to say, I don't even know if you have to pay for the seminars .

All of this is just my personal opinion , I looked at becoming NCRS judge in the late '70's and again last year. But, with the thousands of volunteer hours I've put in with car organizations, I won't pay for the "privilege". I'll work my ass off for free but I won't pay to do it.

And BTW, we treat the SCCA workers very well, free lunch, free dinner, free booze and many times, a $25 dollar gas card for every day.

Information on NCRS event costs. Convention cost can run upwards of $250,000 and a Regional $30,000. Divide $250,000 by 200 cars and $30,000 by 80 cars. The car judging fee would be in the range of $1,250 if there was not a member registration fee.

In NCRS the average member can have their car Judged for a reasonable fee of $50 ~ $125. Last SCCA entry fee I saw advertised was north of $350.

The event registration fee permits a member to participate in all the seminars, technical sessions and judging.

Wow! I had no idea becoming a judge was so expensive.

Love the camaraderie, love the cars, and love the NCRS.

Judging is likely out of reach for a lot of us due to cost.

Bill, Chapter events may be very close and the total cost very reasonable depending on where you live. We live in Texas and you MAY have to drive a great distance to a Chapter event, or not. We recently moved but previously lived 170 miles from the Chapter and Regional event locations. There are very reasonable hotels and restaurants in many cities that a number of folks stay and eat, such as Motel 6, Subway, McDonald's, Pizza Hut, etc. When I raced SCCA, IMSA, SVRA we always stayed and ate cheap due to the cost of the entry fees not to mention car prep, or build. It was great fun and we never complained, except once at Daytona when the temp bordered on freezing or Mid Ohio when it was sweltering and we slept in the bed of the pick-up. All-in-all judging is cheaper than golf. Try it, you'll like it. Steve

Excellent suggestion.

I will be touching base with the local Mason Dixon chapter in MD. The goal is to go through judging for the first time with my 70 Convertible. Event is March 30 and I will be cutting it close in terms of being ready.

Spoke to the judging chairman last year but vette was not back together. He was very very helpful.

Based on how hat goes I will start to pursue judging myself.
