I'm trying to find a correct number/dated carburetor for my 1972, 350/200, std. trans, built in August 1971 (serial #260). Reference books say correct carb is Rochester 7042203 but I have not seen a single one with a 1971 date code - all have been 1972 dates. Books also say 4th

Re: 1972 Correct Number/Date Carburator
Bob, The manuel says the 4th digit is the year of production , I think that means for your 1972 is for that total year(7042203). so depending on id your early car is a Carter or Rochester carb. its either a Julian date code or a month and year date code. Does that sound correct?Last edited by Edward J.; January 2, 2014, 06:26 PM.New England chapter member, 63 Convert. 327/340- Chapter/Regional/national Top Flight, 72 coupe- chapter and regional Top Flight.- Top

Re: 1972 Correct Number/Date Carburator
I just checked - I have a G1 date code that I bought and installed on an early November of 71 car.
You might broaden your search by noting that the Rochesters that were assembled by Carter - which seems to be a lot of the 7042203s - have a letter and number for the date code specifying month and year.
These are not hard to find, as I've got a spare or two for that car just in case [not for sale]. Price a few years ago was $25 to $100 depending on condition.
They were used on a LOT of Chevrolets, so even 40 years later they are common.
If you want to spend more, check here:
Otherwise set up an eBay search to send you e-mails when a 7042203 shows up.

Re: 1972 Correct Number/Date Carburator
Hi Rod. Welcome to the TDB! I notice your membership number indicates you have been on board for quite some time, however, this is your first post. Tell us about your car.
FWIW, I also have an August '71 built '72 MY Corvette (L48/4spd), and the carburetor is indeed 7042203. It is believed to be original to the car and confirmed by judges' scoring multiple times.
Hope this helps.Don Lowe

Re: 1972 Correct Number/Date Carburator
Thanks guys. Consensus is that 7042203 is the correct number. Guess I've been unlucky and just not found one yet with a June/July 1971 date. So I'll keep looking. My '72 is mostly original, 350/200, 4-spd, convertible, A/C, ps, pb, pw, tilt-trim, red with black leather interior, vinyl hardtop. Very nice daily driver. Its been in storage the last 2 years and I'm getting it running again but its running awful - lots of backfiring and low power. So I'm trying to replace it's current large aftermarket double pumper Holley installed by a previous owner with the original carb. I've also got a '67 convertible, 327/300 that I plan to restore once I get the '72 running good again. Have had the '67 a long time and used to post frequently, but not in the last few years.- Top

Re: 1972 Correct Number/Date Carburator
Check with Mark Smith in McQueeney, TX. 830-5601205 is he last number I have for him. I got my correct QJ from Mark about 4 years ago. My car was produced while Rochester was on strike (9/13/71), so mine is a Carter. It is a 7042203 with a G1 date. I know Mark has at least one Rochester available, unless he has sold it. Good luck. Took me two years to find mine.Kurt Geis
