I'm reviewing details on my '64 car against the Judging Guide in preparation for flight judging. My manual say the rear license plate is attached by 2 self-tapping screws that are slotted and have an integral washer. I don't have those screws. Based on the description I think they are similar to the Phillips head screws that are used to attach the glove box surround. One vendor sells slotted sheet metal screws with loose flat washers. Another sells slotted truss head self tapping screws without washers. I have not found any vendor that sells what the Judging Guide seems to describe. Does anyone have original screws that they can photograph? Any idea where correct screws can be purchased? Thanks in advance-Doug

Pictured below are the correct NOS 3794162 front and rear license plate attaching screws (and nuts) for 63-65. The attached plain washer is loose/free spinning.Attached Files- Top

Re: Rear license plate bolts
Thanks guys. I have the LIC set on the car. I guess that means the Judging Guide is incorrect when it says "...integral flat washer". To me "integral" means part of the whole (screw). Otherwise, following the way GM described other hardware, it would say "captive washer" if it couldn't be easily removed from the screw, or just "flat washer" if it was loose on the screw. Any thoughts on this?- Top

Re: Rear license plate bolts
Doug, Just use the readily available screws mentioned and shown above and you will have no problems. They came in a manila bag which is a long story in itself.
You must have a set for the front also. Happy New Year, John- Top

Re: Rear license plate bolts
I only have one complete set of NOS screws and nylon nuts left. (none for sale) I ordered a bag of 20 each back in about 1975 and that's all that's left. GM discontinued the screw assembly shortly thereafter.
In the mid 70's, Buxbaum/Classic Motors was buying most of their C2 Corvettes from California and most still had their original black license plates and attaching hardware. I saved many of the plates and I think most of the unique screw/washer assy's.
That's when I discovered the part number in the GM 63 assembly manual. I was one of the very 1st to have one of those manuals directly from GM. (I think I sent a copy to Jorjorian?)
That was a long time ago. You could still buy a brand new fuel injection top cover, with crossed flag emblem, for about $13. at that time.- Top

Re: Rear license plate bolts
Did not GM use different sourced and different style license plate mounting screws? I have saved many over the years. And one of the styles is truss head slotted and have an integral to the head washer. Another style look the same without integral washer large truss head. I realize dealers just used anything. But those large truss heads are so prevalent (maybe after 65). GM could have major source changes after 65 model for license screws thus explains my observations. Comments?- Top

The 3794162 license plate attaching screw assembly with washer was unique to 63-65.
A company called Au-Ve-Co, or something like that, supplied dealers with misc hardware such as fasteners and mldg clips etc etc. They also have/had a screw shown in their catalog as a replacement for the original 3794162 GM part number for the license plate attaching screw but the washer was fixed, not loose like the original GM screw.
Some years ago, I noticed that a few Corvette reproduction parts vendors were selling this Au-Ve-Co style screw as a direct replacement for the original. It's not correct though.
If you scrounge around in old Chev dealers, you will probably find the Au-Ve-Co style 63-65 license plate screw in their drawers. Te used car department probably used a lot of these.
For 66 and later, the design changed. The new design had a larger slotted head without a washer and also a larger threaded section.- Top

Mike,
Did you work for Richad Buxbaum ? I bought my 396 convertible from him around March 1975 when he was in downtown Downers Grove. For a young guy that place was a heck of a toy store. Wall to wall Corvettes.Larry

Re: Rear license plate bolts
Did you buy the white with red interior 396 car?
Buxbaum was partners with Jack Douglas, a local Chevrolet dealer. Between the two, they acquired quite a number of incredible cars over a short period.
The Downers Grove building was the first location around 74 or 75.- Top

Re: Rear license plate bolts
I bought the Goldwood yellow convertible with white and black interior. It had an unhit body with original paint. It didn't have the original engine, but at that time I neither cared or knew of such things. It was our daily driver even during the winter and boy did we have fun with that car. I later sold it to a Chuck Sindler. Never saw the car again.
Chuck Sindelar sold it through Classic Motors if I remember correctly. His brother Bob worked for Buxbaum. May still be a member here???- Top
