    Dino,
what is the VIN? I had a very original 62 that had one of each also. Which side of yours is unpainted? Email me if you would prefer to share the VIN that way.

      Dino,

From looking at the pics, what were you waiting for? The 62 is nearly stripped as a bonus!!! Yeah!!!!!

Good luck with the adventure!!! Ever need to sell for a little profit, you got a buyer!

looking at the transmission, does it have a drain plug on the bottom? The passenger door panel looked in good shape.

Bell housing does not look right to me....should be aluminum......this is shaping up to be a "not correctly restored corvette"....

The good news is I found the frame stamp number and it matches the VIN......it was hard to find......hidden under the rubber shim, therefore the steel is pristine where it was stampedphoto (53).jpgphoto (55).jpgphoto (73).jpg

photo (60).jpgphoto (65).jpgphoto (67).jpgThe bad news is the BW 4spd and rear end are replaced....could use some help identifying what I have? The transmission tailshaft has a date code of 5-10-66, and WG DIV T10K-7, the main case has T10-1C W.G. DIV, I cannot find any VIN stamp anywhere. regarding the rear end, the carrier casting has G 3 4, and the number 3789812 GM with the large P positraction identifier, I cannot find the axle code and there is no tag in place, the housing has the correct vent tube and the spare tire wood cover has the posi label.....does anyone know anything about the transmission and rear end mentioned above?

                        Dino,

Looks like you have a solid foundation for whatever you decide to do. Just curious, what are you using (doing) to expose the casting numbers and vin numbers that you are posting?

                          Dino -

The diff ratio code and assembly date are stamped on the as-cast flat face of the center section, on the passenger side, usually about 8 or 9 0'clock; the surface is rough and probably pitted/rusty, but that's where the codes are stamped. The G 3 4 date says it's a July 3, 1964 passenger car casting from Detroit Gear & Axle.

In 1964 (ONE YEAR ONLY)-----------------on FULL SIZE Chevy pass cars, (as well as Chevelles, Novas), the STAMPED code was changed from the right side of the center case to the right side axle tube. This practice (stamping the code on the right side axle tube) continued thereafter on all axle housings.
Thus, if a person has a drop out center section from a FULL SIZE 64 Chevy pass car in their 56-62 Vette (or even in a 63 full size car), there WILL NOT be a stamped code/assembly date on the right side of the case---------------------------as was done on 56-62 Vettes (63 for pass cars). Only the casting date will remain on 64 pass car center cases. Therefore, if someone runs across a 1964 (posi or non-posi) pass car rearend center section, there will be NO WAY to determine what the original gears were, UNLESS the center section is still in the original axle housing. Even though this would allow someone to build up a 64 rearend center section (from a pass car) without any gear ratio code stamped on it, and install it in their 56-62 Vette axle husing, the CASTING DATE would still show the year of manufacture. And since the last year for Vettes to still use this type of rearend was 1962, the casting date would be incorrect.

Dear Tom and John, thank you for the info on center section and dating on the rear end........can you guys comment on does the rear end tubes and mount hardware look Corvette 1962 original? I know the shackle bolts look too long, and the springs do not look original, however one rebound strap is intact? can you comment on the tubes and brake back plates or the stabilizer bar etc.....could someone have taken a salvage 64 chev passenger rear end and bolted up in its entirety? thanks for your input.Lanno-Lift-16.jpgLanno-Lift-17.jpg

                                Dino,
Your pictures do not provide the greatest detail, BUUUUUUUUUT, from what I can see, I would say there is a 99.99999% PROBABLY that your axle housing is the one which MOST LIKELY came in your car. Also, is there a drain plug on the BOTTOM CENTER of the axle housing? If not, then FOR SURE it is a 62 axle housing (61 was the last year to get a drain plug on the bottom of the housing). Everything I can see from those pictures is correct for a 62 POSITRAC axle housing.
