1962 Barnfind - Chase of 30 years comes to an end

I first saw this car in 1984 in a carport and have been chasing it since that day....I have called the owner every year since then and asked him to sell it....this week he finally said yes, When I last saw it originally, it was painted purple metal flake, slot mags and rolled interior....I remember the car was mostly there...I just got to see it again, he had attempted to strip the Purple metal flake over black over what I believe to be original red.......he wants 15K, I located all the disassembled trim except the wiper blades...The frame is in good shape as well as the fiberglass panels, some slight crack repair and the glass appears all original, the motor is not froze and I am unsure if it is original, the garage was dark and could not see the 870 cast code, it has a 6500 redline and no evidence I can see of fuel injection...I think the hardtop is from an earlier car. I would appreciate comments on the pictures and tell me what you think....

What are your plans? Are you going to get it running and drive it or go to work finishing the stripping, body work, and paint?

        Dino,

Good pursuit and catch! Hardtops for 61/2 are unique to 61/2. Windows are dated. If they're within 6 months of the Corvette's production date, it would be good for the car.

        Good luck!

        Gary

Hey Jim....My plan is to get it running and I would like to get to my local chapter meet to go through judging and see what I have in detail...I am sure I will know more about it through the Discussion board and reading the books and going through the car. Have gone through a top flight car before and I know that path is an expensive route for a car like this...so it is possible the mechanical is gone through and it becomes a driver. Gary the plexiglass is date 5 6 1 and the car is a mid November 61 build date...so it right at 6 months....the headliner is white...what color interiors would have white headliners?headliner.jpg

I have a original 62 with hardtop and black interior, and the headliner is white. Car is silver.

All 61-62 headliners are white. Looks like a great starting point to me! Congrats!

The 61-62 hardtops have the rear trim with the relief for the raised area running up from the trunk across the deck lid.
And as stated all headliners were white.

Dino , There was a very rough purple metalflake 62 that was originally Red in the St louis area about 20 years ago . It had a big block in it at one time and was a drag car . I tried to buy it a couple of times due to the fact that it was a heavy brake car . It had some home made motor mount brackets on it . I havent seen it in a long time . Check your front backing plates for air screens .

I will take a look Bill....I have known this cars location in Ohio for 30 years....I will still look for the screens, the drums are not correct that is for sure for a big brake car. Here is a shot of some purple metal flakerear lixcense plate.jpg

Hi--Do you know what is required to put a big block in a '61/62??? Does it require a straight axle, or serious modification of the frame???TIA,Rob Vanderhoeven

The extra long U-bolts for the rearend make me wonder if it had Traction Master traction bars installed at one time (the TM brand traction bars for 61-62 Vettes had spacers to allow the anchor plate to clear the rear sway bar bracket) as seen on my 56 below.
