    '65 Headlight assemblies, easier movement?

Does anyone know about putting a spacer/washer on the shaft of the headlights to get easier, smoother movement? I seem to remember that trick someplace but can't recall any details. Any help appreciated.

    Mike,
Shouldn't be necessary. Those buckets are meant to swing with VERY little effort. If yours don't it's time for a little R&R. Before you get too deep into this have you removed either/both motors? They come out quickly once the hood it off. With motor out if any effort is required to swivel the bucket it's time to get your shop manuel out. Good news is all parts that may be worn are available. Back to the garage! Bill

Thanks Bill. I also contacted Rick (who did the seminar on this at our chapter meet a few months ago) and he said the washers would go between the electric motors' gear housings. He is going to show me at his shop next week. Cheers and Merry Christmas!

They should spin easily if the balls are free. There is nothing there to resist movement. However, I have had some trouble with the new end rubber seals and the felt washers. They tend to squeeze the shafts.

Mike, with the motors out of car the buckets should just flop in the breeze. If the motors drive gears grease has gotten hard the motors will have to work to open and close.I did my 63 motors and used a syth. type grease which will not harden over the years. my headlight open and close nearly the same speed, no mods.

Thanks for the tips guys. I was having trouble with the side pre-load binding on the big drive gear on one side.

if you have someone hold the hood straight up, you can get the motor past the hood. if you manually turn the motor a little, they come out very easily. there is a plastic bushing but no washers. as the other gents have said. the buckets should swing freely.
