    Four Post Lift Questions

The garage edition has been completed and I am looking for a four post lift. My ceiling is now 11' 2" at the top of the middle peak of the ceiling. Will this allow me to stack the cars and also give me enough working height since I am about 6' 3"? The lift has a height of 70". Below is a link to the lift I am looking at. Let me know you thoughts.

    Thanks, Larry

    Re: Four Post Lift Questions

Larry, the spec says the Overall Height is 86 1/4", but is that the posts or the runways. It must be the posts, as the clearance under the runway is 70", and the top of runway is 74 3/4". Therefore the runway is apx 4 3/4" thick.

If you're 6' 3", you'll obviously have to duck under the runways to get under the car, but unless you're working on a C5/C6/C7, you should not bump your head too often.

As far as ceiling height goes, that depends on the ground height of the car on the lift. Measure the cars you're planning to put on the lift, and add 74 3/4" to that height to see if it'll clear the ceiling.

p.s. Keep in mind that the Auto Lift Car Park is not ALI certified (based on their brochure and specs), and that it is made offshore from offshore materials. Before you push a button to buy it I recommend you do extensive research on this model. Yes it's inexpensive, but you know the saying.

p.p.s. I looked at the AutoLift very closely at Daytona a few years ago. Price was $1800. I was tempted, but after looking it over very closely I decided against it. I didn't feel the quality of workmanship was to my liking.
I own a Challenger 2-post lift, ALI certified, made in USA. I am also looking to buy a 4-post Challenger lift from a friend who is moving. That is also ALI certified. Maybe the ALI certification isn't important to some people, but it is to me.

Larry You might want to check the archives as this topic has been discussed several times. If you search the archives I'm sure you will have a better idea as to which lift to buy.Terry

I have the Quality/Challenger lifts in my garage. The ceiling is 12'6", and I am 5'10" and don't have to duck under it when the cars are up, and there is about 6"-8" still above the top car to ceiling. Here is a picture of it. I have the roll-up doors on the garage, that way there is no interference with the garage door above the cars.

Not sure if the auto lift is ALI certified ,but looking at the auto lift it looks close to the one I have (DIRECT LIFT) that cost just a little more than the auto lift and is ANSI ALI & ETL certified, Larry check it out on the web site= Direct Lift. JR

i have a four post and a two post auto lifters lift in my garage. ceiling 10'4" the 4 post fully extended i have to crouch under the 2 post i can stand under with no problem. i have shrunk to 6'0". my misteak was when i built the garage i only measured for corvettes. when i work on my pickup i can not raise the 2 post all the way. both lifts are over 10 years and problem free.

I am not familiar with those makes of lifts but can add that I have a lift made by AXE, they call it the Stinger lift, US made in the Midwest and it is 11 years old without one mechanical issue what so ever. Once I ajstd it it has never needed any adjusted. It was not the least expensive lift but the quality can't be beat and they are a good company to do business with.

I have the Auto Lifters of America lift in my shop and yes it was taken over by employee ownership when original owner went under. I am not sure if they are still in business or not. A quick search on the Garage Journal site will render more info than you could ever use on lifts and ALI certification. One thing to keep in mind is garage door opener if you place lift under one. If you have a conventional opener with the chain or screw bar overhead, you lose close to a foot of usable height. You don't have to ask, I'll tell you how I know...I MESSED UP and raised on one of my project cars too high and then opened the door. Chip.
