braze original oil pan with thin spots or am I over thinking?

I recently managed to hunt down an original 57-60 oilpan (the #3735642 yay!). It has some thin spots from rust getting to it on the leading edge of the steps on the bottom. Should I have it brazed on the inside and smooth with Bondo maybe, or just smooth it with JB-Weld on the outside and not worry too much?

    Ian,

The most prudent fix for the oil pan would be to braze from the inside, bondo and smooth from the outside and paint. Don't think I would trust JB Weld for a permanant fix unless there was no other way. Used it once on an aluminum head someone had ported thru the wall and it worked perfectly but......!
Good luck with your hard to find pan.

      Ian,
You guys have it figured out but I would like to say something about JB weld. I had a magnisium pan with corrosion oon the inside where water was trapped under the scud. I blasted it & used JB weld. About 6 years later I had to remove the pan and the JB was exactly as I put it on and still gray after all the hot oil it lived in.
The product is good and the prep is very important. The rust has to be 100% gone and a good wipe with acetone or equilivent. Dont use the fast cure.

Thanks for the info guys. I will braze it to be safe. I've been using JBWeld (or equivalent) to fix little odds and ends. Like the spring stud on the clutch pedal adjuster plate.

This year, I bought an original pan at Carlisle that had had a nut welded on the outside for a drain plug. I had the pan blasted and the engine shop removed the outside nut and reinstalled the rectangular nut on the inside. He did a leak test and also found some small holes which he repaired. I then took some JB weld and applied it to the outside bottom of the pan, smoothed it out, applied a thin coat of fiberglass filler over the JB and painted. Looks original.
