Tie Rod End Clamp "Clocking" Position

In the 1965 AIM they show the tie rod end clamps being in a certain "clocked" position at angles of 45 degrees fore or aft of the centerline of the tie rod. Are the clamps to be positioned anywhere in that 90 degree area or are they to be clocked pointing straight down? See page E170.

    Thanks,

    James West

    James -

No such thing as page E170 - it's in UPC 9, sheet 2. As shown on that sheet in View "A", the inboard clamps are to be positioned within 45* either side of vertical, facing down, and as shown in View "B", the outboard clamps are to be positioned within 45* either side of horizontal, facing rearward.

Sorry that this isn't a better scan of the tie rod specs from the 1976 AIM.

I do not have a 1965 AIM but I suspect that the directions are the same. This AIM sheet specifically calls out the inboard clamp and the outboard clamp directions within a 90 degree "window". Note that the slots in the tie rod sleeves must not be located in the area of the bolts and clamp jaws. Also, the production sleeves have a machined groove on the outboard (LH thread) end. The small drawing of the sleeves and tie rod ends at the top is mine.
