    1971 Wiper Transmission

I was just cleaning up the wiper transmissions for my 71 and I removed the transmission from the mounting plate. I discovered after removing all the black sealant that the mounting plate was painted blue under the transmission and under that was red oxide primer. So I take it that just the mounting plates were on the body when it was painted, then the wiper well was blacked out then wiper transmissions were installed and then the black sealant was applied. Am I correct in the procedure?

I would think the sealant would go before the transmission install. That way there would be better access to apply the sealant, but I believe you have the rest of the procedures properly sequenced. See what others think.

Maybe the main body of the wiper well was sealed with the black asphalt like sealant before transmissions were installed and then after they were installed sealant was applied around them. They have quite a bit applied around the the body of the transmission and over the mounting plate. I agree it would be alot easier to seal the rest of the wiper well without anything in there.

Sheldon, I am pretty my 72 wiper linkage had a little sealant over sprayed on the arms on my 72 .

As I recall, the trans and linkage had the heavy sealant all over them. My 71 has had all of that area reconditioned, so no help there. I have a unrestored 75 in my shop that has the sealant heaviest all around the trans post as if that was the reason for the sealant. It has overspray on the linkages and even on the washer hoses where they are attached at the trans post and on the hoses going up the wiper arms, although I see none on the arms themselves. Oddly enough, the linkage area is not completely covered and some of the panel seams in that area are not covered. Maybe just a bad day on the line. Chip.
