Repro T3's worth points over non-T3's?

'66 L79 Vert #1241-- I have non- T3's, and was deducted 9 points. A repro set of 4 T3's is in the range of $175 (lectric limited), which appear correct but of course have DOT molded into the glass. How many points would I recover (if any) for these repros? i. e., there's a point of diminishing returns on replacing things vs price (I wouldn't be willing to pay the price for OEM-- plus, those would be 40+ year old lights with no guarantee of function or longevity.

I had the Lectric Limited lamps on my 1960. I got a deduct of 3 at the Bowling Green Regional and 0 deduct at the Hampton National

apparently, discrepancies abound at Judgings-- nice to know there's the potential for a no-deduct with the repros. Do you know if the DOT stamping was visible (lectric ltd told me they change the location of the DOT marking periodically)

      Thanks, Donald

        Stephen -

You really need to order the 8th Edition "Corvette Judging Reference Manual" from the NCRS on-line store; between it and the Judging Guide, it would have answered almost all of your recent questions, and will help prepare you for your next judging meet.

John-- have (and have read) all manuals-- my questions relate to what actually happens at meets. The (much appreciated) anecdotal experience of members with Judging experience is what I seek. The answers are often different from what is stated in the manuals.

          Cheers

I no longer own the 1960, so I can't look. I don't think I could see a DOT with them on the car. I think I read that there was another difference in the element construction of the high beam or low beam of the current reproductions and the originals.

In areas where there are standard deductions such as tires and headlights there should not be any differences between any judges. The standard deductions take subjective decisions out of our hands. It also make it easier to judge and more fair for the car owner. So if you see more points being deducted than the standard deduction, escalate immediately to the team leader then the judging chair for the event at the event. After the event it is too late.

                Stephen -

If there's a "difference" when an item is covered by a Standard Deduction, there should be NO difference on the judging field, or you have a legitimate beef to disagree with and/or escalate if necessary. Such an item is either judged in accordance with the Standard Deduction as noted in the Corvette Judging Reference Manual, or it isn't.

                  Stephen,

There was a discussion of the visibility of the DOT on the discussion board a few months ago. You should be able to find that discussion by searching for it. As best I can recall, the upshot is the DOT is visible on all the current repros and by federal law must it be visible. In the not too distant past there might have been an attempt by Lectric Limited to put the DOT marking someplace where it couldn't be seen, but that was evidently nixed by the powers that be. So, I think you can count on good judges finding the DOT marking and taking a deduct for it. It you don't want that to happen you'll have to look for NOS or used bulbs made before the DOT marking was required. Those old bulbs can be found. They might not work very long in your car, but that's the risk you take using 45+ year old bulbs.

                  Gary
