AM/FM radio slider switch broke off

'66 L79 Vert #1241-- In routine use, the slider switch (AM to FM) broke off. The switch won't stay in now, and it's attachment points (2 tiny pins on the back) seem sheared off. Assuming I can find the replacement part-- Do I need to get the residual bits of the switch attachment points out of the holes they attach to, and, how to do that? The swich seems to be metal-- would a magnet pull the remnants out, or should I use some other method? I really dont want to extract the radio from the dash if I don't have to.

    Thanks

    Stephen,

Corvette Central makes the part you need to repair the slider. Doesn't cost much but it's a pain to spread the little legs and trim them so that the slider will completely go from AM to FM and back again.
Sorry, but you have no choice, the radio has to come out. The little attachment points that are broke are not magnetic.
Sounds like the radio has been repaired before and the slider has been replaced.
Probably sending the radio to one of the instrument repair specialists would be a good idea as the replacement of the slider can be very frustrating.

OUCH-- Could I just crazy-glue the slider back in place if I'm carefull not to get enough glue outside the pin holes to glue it stuck? Does this function get checked at PV Judgings?? Anyone ever do this successfully??

      Thanks

        Stephen,

No matter what, the radio has to come out!
If you go to all that trouble, fix it correctly and fix it once. When you get it apart you will see how super glue will not help you.
And yes, you will have to slide the radio from AM to FM to pass PV.

The repro slider has pins that have to be crimped onto a metal spring and they aren't very forgiving. I broke two before I got it to work right and yes, I had to massage it all to work correctly because the repro isn't quite right.

Re: AM/FM radio slider switch broke off

the repo slider is made from a cheap pot metal and the pins will break off at nothing (very little effort, even if following the instructions, will break the pins). it
seems almost impossible to get them to spread the correct amount and not break them, If not spread enough, the spring retainer will work off the pins or up the pins allowing the slider to become very loose. then it's start-over time
