1957 Paint Locations for Trunk and Under Deck Lid Area - Please Help

Hi. I just bought a nice 1957 Corvette with 2 tops, 2x4 dual quads 245hp, PW, and an original 4 Speed. It is a nice original car, with original #s motor and transmission. The car is Black with Silver coves, and the Red interior. Unfortunately, the previous owner painted the Trunk area, and under the Deck Lid Black, to match the exterior. From photos I have found of some Top Flight cars on the internet, I believe these areas should be painted Red to match the interior.

I am having my painter work on these areas starting tomorrow, and have a few questions. My NCRS Judging Guide was ordered a couple of days ago, but won't arrive in time to answer some of these questions. My Noland Adams Restoration Guide for solid axles is in my storage unit, which I have not been able to travel to yet.

Can someone please help me with the following questions:

1- Should the paint for these inside areas be flat, semi-flat, gloss or semi-gloss?

2- What areas behind or below the seats should be painted red also? Does the floor get painted red also? How about the vertical area behind the seats? (I see that the gas tank cover should be red, as well as that entire area where the soft top sits, except for around the edge of the deck lid. I will have to order a new black felt as well.)

3- In the trunk area, I see that the entire bottom, sides, behind the trunk divider board, springs, and the bottom of the trunk lid gets painted red. I also see that the lips around the trunk and trunk lid stay black. How about the spare tire board? Does that get painted red also? How about the area past the wheel wells, on the inside the rear quarter panels? I also need to buy a new trunk divider board in red.

4- How about inside the gas cap area? I know it goes black, but should it look the same as the exterior black? Should it be less Gloss? or Flat? I am asking about the area surrounding the gas tank neck, or the entire area surrounding where the gas cap, plus the bottom of the gas door?

I have attached 2 photos of My 1957 Corvette, as well as 2 photos of another 1957 Corvette I found online, showing the trunk and deck lid areas, that I think are correct. Just not sure about the areas that I cannot see, included in the questions above.

    Thanks in advance,

    Steve

Steve, from the TIM & JG and from my '57 with original interior and trunk red paint:

    1. The paint is semi-gloss. A flattner is added to Venetian Red.
    2. The vertical area behind the seats is painted red. The floor is not painted and has some body color over spray. You are correct about soft top storage
    area.
    3. The tire board is stained transparent black for all color cars. The fender cavities are bare with some red over spray. The wheel wells in the trunk are
    painted.
    4. The inside of the entire gas cap area is sprayed with the exterior color but lacked buffing so is not as shiney.
    5. Also, the exterior paint and inside of trunk and soft top area paint colors are divided by the weather strip.

Steve, David Smith has a very original Onyx Black '57 and is an excellent source on these cars, Search his posts as he has valuable info. on what '57's were like as they rolled off the STL line. Good Luck! Steve

With one exception, I have never heard of a flattener being added to Venetian Red, or any other color to produce a semi-gloss finish. The interior and trunk lacquer paint, although not buffed, was a gloss finish. Flattener was used to reduce the gloss of the paint that was applied to the top of the dash to eliminate glare.

I assume the statement was referribg to the practice of modern day restorers to knock down the gloss produced by the use of urethane paints.

            Steven:
Your experiences with your '57 are similar to mine. When I bought my Black & Silver with red interior '57 several years ago it was half restored by someone who did not pay attention to detail. The whole trunk area was painted black including the inside of the lid. The area behind the seats and the top compartment were also all painted black. I have no idea what the original color of the car was but whoever painted it took the easy way out. Ironically the exterior black was done very well.
