Lived in Jersey all my life, been driving vettes for 35 years - live about 30 minutes south of Colts Neck, never heard of Rick Barnes. Not saying he does not do top notch work, just saying I never heard of him. What kind of work are you looking for?

Thanks for responding, Ed. I think I need some clutch or transmission work. It is a 1963 S/W coupe, 327, 250 hp, 4 speed (Muncie). I had the engine rebuilt and new clutch installed about a year and a half ago. The mechanic who did it is in bad health now and not able to work on the car. I am getting noise when clutch is disengaged (pedal to the floor) and I feel it in the transmission when I go to shift. The problem is it is not consistent. I can go 50 miles and no issue. I go another 2 miles and the noise starts. It then goes away. Local mechanic drove car 30 miles. No issue. He thinks it is fine. I know it is not. My thought is pilot bushing, but I am not a mechanic. I do not have the tools or experience to pull the transmission. I called Ed Hartnett (recommended by members). He repairs transmissions, but the transmission has to be removed and shipped to him. He does not do the removal. Any advice? Thanks.

It sure sounds like a throwout bearing. Mine started unexpectedly after driving 40 miles to Kissimmee last year. It was perfectly fine on the return trip home but happened again on a short trip. I replaced the bearing AND clutch since it was apart even though it looked great.

I know how it is to take your baby just anywhere but based on me being able to perform this surgery, I would think any competent mechanic should handle it easily. Have you checked with you local chapter to ask for assistance in finding a good mechanic? Hopefully you will find it is not in the tranny

          Hello Ray,
Auto Excellence has been there for quite a few years that I know of. He does do Corvette work, I have not used him personally but I've been to his shop a few times. I use DiShiavi Enterprizes he is in Jackson NJ. He does repairs to complete restorations. You can try him if you want. Bismark road in Jackson, 732-833-6400, good luck
