Small block aluminum intake manifold paint

The judging manual refers to the the intake being painted silver after the engine was painted. What was paint and were the aluminum valve covers painted also?
    Thanks,
    Jeff

    Jeff,
Have you checked your judging guide about paint on the valve covers? IMO, the valve covers were on the engine but masked off poorly. I think a small amount of paint on the inside lip is okay. For the final answer check with your national team leader. As for the paint, use dull aluminum in a spray can. Krylon makes some. Good luck! Back to the garage! Bill

It's true that some of the intake manifold received a coating of dull aluminum paint. The purpose of this operation was to cover the naked cast iron portion of the cyl head between the valve cover and the intake manifold as this section would not have been painted orange during the paint process.

When this was done, several inches up on the intake manifold were also covered and the same goes for the valve covers. The painter wasn't using a small touch up gun so the spray pattern was wide.

Also included would be the thermostat housing, bolts and gasket.

A fine mist over spray could even be seen on the tops of the exhaust manifolds on some engines, depending on how rushed the painter was that day.

Often times, you would also see a bit of dull aluminum on the front face of a cyl head and also on the rear portion of the bypass hose and clamp.

As Bill mentioned, be sure to look for dull aluminum paint. Not regular silver paint. Dull aluminum looks very close to the color of the intake manifold so it seems to blend in without being highly visible.

When I go about detailing my engine - I want to take the detailing to a high standard, but in some cases don't want to replicate ALL of the "rushed" processes that were used on the assembly line.
What would your opinions or experiences be with with either clear-coating - or even powdercoating - an aluminum intake so that it doesn't tarnish quickly?

I would have a negative opinion of both. Not even close to original replication. By the way what tarnish? If fuel is causing it then fix that.

Gene's right about that, discoloration on an aluminum intake is usually the result of fuel, oil, or anti-freeze spilling on it and baking there...aluminum itself doesn't noticeably "tarnish", it forms only slight white corrosion that is virtually invisible...

Painting will only give you a different surface, one that won't look original and will still stain from these fluids.

Jason, I agree with Gene. If you are going to show the car give the judges what they want. Bottom line though, it's your car, do what you want, just accept gracefully any deductions made. Remember, if you drive the car to the show there is a mileage allowance of one point for each one hundred miles driven. I drove my MUCH modified '66 coupe from Albuquerque to Frisco in Oct. and still scored 97% after the allowance was added to my raw score. Bill

Fair enough.....I think I'm getting on the same page with the rest of you.
When I referred to "tarnishing" I was referring to the dull gray that would develop on the aluminum intakes, valve covers or wheels of cars I've had in the past. BUT.....they were all daily drivers that were exposed to the elements. If I have to hit the bare aluminum parts with a little bit of "Never Dull" every now and then to keep things clean, so be it........
