    54 generator wiring

Looks like both the braided wires go to the ground screw. I saw a picture of a car with what looks like a condensor at that same location. The question is........does 54 have a condensor there and if so where does the wire go? My gut tells me there is no condensor. Thanks again!!

    Re: 54 generator wiring

'54 generators do have a noise suppression condenser. The wire lead attaches to the armature terminal of the generator (same terminal to which the larger diameter wire attaches). Here is a picture of the original condenser on the generator of my unrestored '54:

        Hi Jerry,

Next time I'm down in my shop I'll take a look. Feel free to pester me if it appears, after a couple of days, that I forgot to do that.

Thanks for the pic Jim, is this something I can buy? havnt seen this one. Its not the same as an ordinary condensor like in the distributer so I need to to locate on. What would happen if not installed as my radio isnt ready yet. Thanks again!!!

Guy, if I were in need of one of these, I'd look for an old junque yardde and scrounge one from a Chebby of the same era. I'm not up on who repros condensers, if anyone does. If you don't have it installed, your engine will run just fine and the generator will charge normally. You might hear some generator whine in the radio, though.

Here is what is on the generator of my unrestored '54. AFAIK, it is original to the car.

Chris, Guy, I'm glad you like the picture. I'd be happy to make more.

My '54 is relatively unmolested. My Dad bought it from the original owner 43 years ago. It was missing only the side curtain bag and the upper ignition shield.

                        80+ pictures of it here:

Thanks, Guy. I'm glad those pictures have been helpful. It's a decent car. In 1998, my son and I drove it from Georgia to California. Talk about a memorable trip! It's starting to show its age...... but then again, so am I.
