Bob------
The 283 and 327 crankshafts are different. For one thing, the 283 crankshaft has a 3.00" stroke whereas the 327 has a 3.25" stroke. With respect to journal size, though, the 55-67 283 and 62-67 327 are the same.
As far as connecting rods go, there were many different connecting rods used over the 1955-67 period for small blocks. The rod length and big end diameters were the same so, theoretically, they can be interchanged between 283 and 327. That does not mean they should be interchanged, though. Basically, no 55-61 small block rod should be interchanged or used in any 1962-67 small block, either 283 or 327. I believe that 1962-67 rods can be used in 55-61 small blocks but a complete reciprocating assembly re-balance is necessary.
Even the 1962-67 small block rods, of which there were several part numbers, are weak and I would not recommend using them in anything more than mild street operation. The best of the 1962-67 rods were the late 1965 to 1967 rods of GM #3864881. They can be used in any 62-67 327.
Whenever crankshafts and rods are "mixed-and-matched", a complete reciprocating assembly balance is necessary. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
