Gary,You did not mention what engine #213 was? Could make a difference? On my car the invoice from the dealer it list the engine serial number as being "FIOIOEG" so that does give an indication that the motor in my car is the one it came with. Doug

Engine was an FG IIRC. Searched my 35mm photo files, but can't find an engine photo.

So it's possible they were run on different lines or treated differently?

Here is some pics of my car. I am in the process of replacing the water pump and getting the radiator fixed so I can start it, that's why it's apart. It had been sitting in my dad's garage since about 1977 untill I moved it to my garage last month. It had only been started (never driven) 2 or 3 times during that time with the last time being in 2000.

After cleaning the greese and junk off you can clearly see the engine is red even though a lot off paint came off. The one pic was to show you the serial number that matches the dealer invoice that I have when he bought it. I do have some picture of it when it was new but there in B/W and I dont have a pic of the engine. At Least I have not found one yet but It wouldn't help anyway. I think I have a pretty good case that the car did come with a red engine? Don't you think? Or at least a case to keep digging further into it?

Nice car. Please post photos of the fuel pump block off plate and the bell housing - rear of the engine.

One of the photos showed the engine on a jack and thought you might have a photo of the back side of the complete engine, bellhousing and all.

I worked in automotive manufacturing for over 40 years and I can tell you that all kinds of "non spec" parts, processes and materials are used. The assembly line must go on and manufacturing will use anything that is close. I even saw some manufacturing engineer using k-mart paint on a chassis because they ran out of the spec paint in the middle of the night shift. Believe me it happens. So red paint on a 57 engine is not out of question.

the valve cover's corvette script appears painted red also, which leads me to believe that someone got a couple cans of red rattle can spray paint and changed the engine color. also, the color of what's left on the front of the heads, in these pictures, appears more orange than red.57 vin # 1093's 548 was/is orange. mike

Agree with Mike. #1286 was red in '64 when I bought "her". I have some 306 heads which are red and Nov '56 997 heads which are orange---all with original paint that I have had for decades. Steve

When I look very closely at the photos it appears to show '57 orange on the heads. Although the '57 engine orange paint is faint, it appears to be there.
