    Jim,

    That's my plan.

      Re: Fire extinguisher

Stephen - Fellow NCRS member Bruce Fosdike gave a technical presentation on fires, fire extinguishers, and the lasting & damaging effects of dry powder fire extinguishers at the 2012 Lone Star Regional. Very informative and very eye-opening. Bruce is a retired fire captain in California.

He sells Halotron fire extinguishers made in America by H3R Performance. Halotron is a clean agent and leaves no residue. The agent is expelled under pressure as a liquid which converts to a gas almost instantly leaving no trace except the fire is extinquished.

I suggest you contact Bruce at the California Academy of Fire Specialists and let him describe the H3R brand of extinguishers. I and many others bought one for each car after listening to his presentation and "practicing" on my C5 (without the fire!).

Bruce can be reached at 805-203-8184.

          Tim,

The CO2 extinguishers won't lease a mess like the dry powder units will.

            Re: Fire extinguisher

FYI: I have been reading articles for the past three days and finally decided on a Halon 1211 extinguisher. Purchased Amerex C354TS 3 lb unit with a discharge hose. Felt the extra .5 lbs. and the discharge hose for shooting into the engine area with minimal hood opening best for my needs. Paid $160 including $12.95 shipping. This thread and the archives were a great help.

              Terry,

I think you made a good choice. Given the availability of the Halon 1211 units, I would't buy another C02 unit because of the issue of hydro-testing and refilling every 5 years. I also like the idea of the discharge hose on the Halon unit you bought. I wish my Halon H3R unit had that feature. Oh well, live and learn.

                  Re: Fire extinguisher

wow-- my post gave birth to a tutorial!! Much learned. I bought a halon extinguisher based on consensus above, and am happy, hoping I never need to use it, but it's a 47 year old car, and fires did/do happen.

                  Thanks to you all
