deduction for Air Cleaner Assembly-- don't understand

'66 L79 'Vert #1241-- deduction -2 (O) for Air Cleaner Assembly, remark "silkscreen lettering (?) Font. Can anyone interpret this for me? What would get the points back-- would a repro assembly with correct silkscreened lettering in correct Font do it, and, where is this available?

    thanks

If the font is incorrect, repo is what you likely have.

thanks-- begs the question, though-- are there repros available with correct font that recoup the lost points?

I don't know of any reproductions that are so perfect that they would be undetectable from original. It amazes me that reproduction sources can't get these sort of things perfect but that's how it is. Most reproductions that contain printed script are, in some way or another, different from the originals. This not only includes the silk-screened air cleaner lids but also most other reproduction labels, decals, and other items with printed matter.

I guess getting the printing exactly right is a lot harder than it would seem. If it were not, I suppose they'd be doing it.

          Stephen,

I suggest you speak with Richard Fortier. His contact information is in the Driveline. He can likely fix you up with a lid that will not garner a deduct.

One of the problems now days with reproducing text is that all type is set using computers and the letter spacing is variable. That is the letter M will take up more line width than the letter i. In the old days type was set mechanically and all letters had the same width. End result is a block of text will have different line widths today than back then, and this difference is easily discernible.

One would think one could reproduce a block of text by photographing an original, but my efforts at using that method just have not been successful. For some reason merging old technology with new technology just doesn't work.

None of that explains the difference in font width that started this discussion.

              Terry,

The key to creating a dead nuts copy of any original text is not to use just one font and not to use any inter-letter spacing or stroke or fill width dictated by a word processing or drawing program. In some cases, I've resorted to making individual letters using basic drawing tools in Adobe Illustrator when the perfect letter did not exist in any standard Adobe font family.

I encourage people to contact Richard Fortier for air cleaner lid restoration. Richard is aware of the requirements for flash chrome and for the silk screen text. To the best of my knowledge, none of the standard catalog companies has a repro air cleaner lid that will past judging muster, nor do they offer a lid restoration service comparable to Richard's.

By using programs that let you adjust spacing of letters you can mimic the original labels and fonts, it just takes time.
I've been at it for several years with good results.

Many, many hours invested to get those results, though.
