    Tornado in washington,il.

I SAW THE TERRIBLE DISTRUCTION IN WASHINGTON ,IL. I SOLD A CORVETTE,LAST YEAR TO A VERY NICE COUPLE WHO LIVE THERE. I WAS WONDERING IF ANYONE KNOWS IF THE STORM HIT ,208 N Wood Street ~ Washington, IL 61571. I HATE TO CALL THEM NOW , BUT I WANT TO SEND MY PRAYERS TO THEM AND EVERYONE ELSE WHO WAS AFFECTED BY THE STORM.

I doubt a land line would get through, and cell communication is probably sketchy at best. In these kinds of situations the first responders are often on cell communication because their radio frequencies are chocked with traffic. Check Google Earth against the on-line aerial views of the carnage. The streets may be recognizable on GE, but if they were in the hardest hit zone even that may not work.

My prayers for all those folks in the tornadoes over this past weekend. Some of the guys I work with live in Coal City and Williamington. Fortunately all of them had no major problems, but picking up the pieces is not easy -- as those of you who have been through Katrina or Sandy know.

My guys are working 12 on/8 off beginning yesterday. We will get most of the restoration done this week. At least we are in-state this time. Peoria and Washington are a different utility, but we will go there after we get our stuff back up; if they still need us.

Hope and pray for safety for all. Pretty bad. Utility workers and humane support organizations do a great job under some pretty bad conditions. For those of us "experienced" folk remember the Mid West Palm Sunday tornadoes of '65? 47 tornadoes 250-271 dead, 1500+ injured, Russiaville, IN with just curbs left, etc. A few days later we went for a ride north of where we lived and saw a cow in a tree, a chicken driven half way into a tree along with boards and straw driven into mangled trees.

I went through the tornado that hit Marion IL in 1982. I was Marion City Commissioner of Public Health and safety
and we lost 8 good people and most of my house. Could tell many stories of death and damage; but, not much good
I can say about any tornado.

          George,
I take it you and your new home & garage were OK in this one.

            Terry,
We did good in this one; lost a few shingles off the roof and the construction "port-o-potty" went down the hill,
but no real damage; life is good.

I am glad to hear that you Dianna and the new house/garage are OK. Good news.

I just heard that we (more accurately the tornado victims without power) are receiving assistance from the electric utility (hydro) in Toronto. Scott will be pleased to hear his people are coming to our assistance. I also heard one of the riders in the contract was a stipulation that they leave their mayor behind.*

The number of poles we have to replace is growing by the hour as we are able to get to more locations and assess the damage. This will be a tough one for the affected people.

              * Sorry to heap coals on that fire, but we have a lot of experience with politicians with stripes, and when someone else has those issues it is hard to ignore it. I was just kidding about their mayor, but I was told their utility workers are coming to our assistance.

                Stephen,
Are you originally from that area? That shot was taken about 7 miles from where I grew up & about 6 miles from where I live now. The picture was taken in a little Town called Dunlap, there is a Lowes now where that home is show in the photo. The town was pretty much wiped out and never rebuilt. It seems like there was a drive-in theater and Trailer Park where many lives were lost. We were lucky and had no damage at our place in '65. I was eight years old at the time but I still remember hearing some of the awful stories, surveying the damage and President Johnson coming to town.

Thank goodness we have better early warning systems today. That's not to minimize the folks we lost...Cars, Homes & Property can be replaced, lives can't.

I just found out one of my colleagues who lived in Coal City lost his home and all the family possessions. He and his family are safe, but "things" are gone. This gives one pause to consider the meaning of life and the relative value of people and things.

You can bet that my company State Farm will be there. We can't replace lives, but we can get people into temporary housing, etc until there home is rebuilt and personal belongings replaced.

Mike, we lived in Butler at the time and before that Etna Green. In '67 I moved to Ft. Wayne. I had just bought a new house in '76 and the first week a tornado went over the house, didn't touch down, and only a couple of shingles lifted. Did major damage to a trailer park a few miles away. Year later lived in Connersville and got a call from an employee who said a tornado just leveled his house. Before I could get out of the office a local policeman told me the same thing. When I got to his house I saw only his house destroyed out of the 30-40 in the neighborhood. He, his wife, and one week old baby had hidden in the bath tub and were unhurt. He called me on the phone that had been in his kitchen. It still worked perfectly. Some time later tornado hit Rushville and did some bizarre things. One house looked completely untouched while houses around it were heavily damaged and destroyed. When I went inside that house it was covered with mud and dirt that had been sucked down the chimney. Steve

We love the mid-west, and the people, you know the red states. But we have too much "stuff" to take a chance on the weather. Unlike the young fellas, if we suffered a catastrophic loss we could never recover.

Been a long time since I was there driving to Peoria from I-55, but is Washington the town with a traffic circle? Saw a picture from a friend in Chicago who has some in laws there and in it was a red C-5 unside down under some debris.
