Valve Cover Restoration and Judging Results

Anyone had your valve covers restored by Jerry MacNeish or J.D. then had them judged? If so, how did they judge?

    Thanks,

    Don

i sebt john degregory what i considered un-restorable 64 aluminum valve covers. the pitting was severe. i could't believe how well they turned out. i haven't used jerry mc so can't comment on his work. his reputation is excellent. mike

Don, I have seen covers restored by each. They each look better than the boxed NOS sets I bought new in the 60's. Steve

Same for me. JD did great job. They haven't been judged yet but I don't expect any problems, considering how they look.

FWIW: Sent my LT1 Valve covers to Jerry MacNeish; passed all judging and the price was very reasonable. Larry

Rumor has it that Doc got the valve covers from the Titanic.
What destroys aluminum you ask? Keeping them in a barn where live stock critters go #1 all over the aluminum. True story. JD

Jerry M. did my '69 Z/28 intake and valve covers 12 years ago.

I have a differing opinion of Dave M. work it is my opinion that the original finish is removed. I feel that it no longer looks as they did originally other may see it different then I do. In my opinion the finish had a subdued gloss with a slight refection quality.

Here is a photo of an 1971 LT-1 with new out of the box valve covers with the push in rubber oil fill cap. Boxes dated 1972 came with the fill cap. You can see the refection of the exhaust manifold in the lower part of the cover.

The mid years had a duller finish than the LT-1 covers

The original covers, both NOS and low mileage untouched for C1s and 2, had a swirl effect when the casting cooled, with minor color differences. The restored ones have a uniform color and not as much casting flaws. FWIW,

Drove the 64 over 5000 miles to three Regionals and the San Jose National, one dust storm and 40 lbs of bugs!

John's work is excellent on both valve covers and FI units. Both are what you wished they were when they came from GM. Beautiful!!!!! JD's work is done in a reasonable time also, hint hint!

Yes, I can see the effect you are talking about in the ones currently on my 66. Not sure if they are current casting or olders. I have a seconded set I am getting in the next few days that I think I will have restored.
